Inspections are required pre-use by wearer and a 6 monthly thorough examination by a competent person. It is recommended that equipment used in arduous environments (e.g. demolition, steel erection, scaffolding) is inspected every 3 months.
All thorough examinations and interim inspections must be recorded.
Pre-use checks by user needs to be tactile and visual. Training in the use of the harness needs to be given and a record kept.
Some manufacturers recommend an obsolescence date, normally 5 years from purchase.
Keep a register of all harnesses and lanyards. Combine this with a controlled inspection regime.
A lanyard that has been used to arrest a fall should never be re-used. It should be withdrawn and destroyed.
