IMPACT OF EDITING

Mitchell Waters

TIME LINE

Lumiere Brothers were the pioneers of the moving image production.

Georges Melies revolutionized film by inventing a basic editing technique the

jump cut.

Edwin.S.Potter brought temporal overlaps to film which is when you film the

scene from to point. This technique was used in many of his films.

D.W.Griffith made the first block buster

GEORGES MÉLIÈS

Georges Méliès at the beginning of his career he was a French

illusionist but then took inspiration from the “Lumière Brothers” and

then went into film.

Georges Méliès created the jump cut by accident and made it look

like a bus turned into hearse and revolutionised editing forever.

He then used this technique in the first ever film “Trip to The

Moon” which was made in 1902.

Also in the Movie “Hugo” you really see how film effected him and

how much of an impact it had on people.

LINEAR & NON-LINEAR EDITING

Linear video editing is a video editing post-production process of

selecting, arranging and modifying images and sound in a

predetermined, ordered sequence.[1] Regardless of whether it was

captured by a video camera, tapeless camcorder, or recorded in a

television studio on a video tape recorder

Non-linear editing for films and television postproduction is a

modern editing method which enables direct access to any frame in

a digital video clip, without needing to play through the footage

EXAMPLES OF TECHNIQUES USED BY THE PIONEERS

Eye matching – is when no matter what camera angle is

being used my eyes will always be on the subject to keep

continuity.

reverse shot – the reverse shot is when two people are

having a conversation and there is a close up of the person

speaking.

Most of these techniques work with the concept of

continuity

CONCLUSION

I think editing is important because it make the movie

flow and helps you understand what its about and what's

happening. If Méliès didn’t don’t create the first editing

technique then we would not have the blockbuster movies

that we have today.
