Improvements to the NOAA Geostationary Sea Surface Temperature Product Suite
Eileen Maturi, NOAA/NESDIS/STARAndy Harris, Jonathan Mittaz, Prabhat Koner
University of Maryland, CICS
Geostationary SST Products• Satellites
– GOES-E/W– MTSAT-2– MSG-2
• Products– Hourly, 3-hourly & daily gridded binary– NetCDF (GHRSST-L2P)
• Improvements to Bayesian Cloud Mask– Individual Probability Density Functions for each satellite
• Physical Retrieval– Hourly bias corrections for channel radiances (~5-day smoothing)– Physical inversion methodology (see Prabhat Koner’s presentation)– Daytime corrections for solar contribution to 3.9 micron channel radiance
• CRTM Improvements– Input increased NCEP fields– Input aerosol product
• Diurnal Warming Estimates– Use NCEP fluxes of heat & momentum in modified 1-d Kantha-Clayson mixing scheme
Retrieval Algorithms
• Regression-based SST retrieval
• Physically-based SST retrieval

Geostationary Global Merged Product
GOES-W GOES-E MSG MT-SAT
NOAA Multi-SST Analysis
• 11-km product– GOES-E/W– MTSAT-2– MSG-2– NCEP ice mask (was AMSR-E now SSMI)– MW SST data• Intended to add AMSR-E• Looking to AMSR-2• WindSat Exploring with RSS
Improvements NOAA Multi-SST Analysis
• 5-km SST analysis• Nighttime only version– NOAA Coral Reef Watch
• Diurnally Corrected– Day & night data– Using modified Kantha-Clayson scheme
11 km global multi-SST analysis (NOAA-19, MetOp-A, GOES-E/W, MTSAT-2 and MSG SSTs)
