In Remembrance of our Japanese Heroes

Within this book lies Tanka poems of Kamehameha Maui students. These students express their emotions and sympathy that have been felt by the Japanese internees during World War ll. The Japanese would create Tanka poems to express their feelings of times of misery and forlornness in their war situations. In 5 lines of 31 syllables, stories of inspiration from the Japanese are revealed.

Into the War By: Chanel Browne

Bombs are whistling

toward our Pearl Harbor.

People are running

away from a time of peace,

and into a time of war.

My tears fall as I stand behind the wire fence. Soldiers everywhere; but I know the 442’s will bring us honor and pride.

Honor and Pride By Nicci Enovijas

Let the bodies hit the floor By: Kaimi Gilliland

I can’t turn back now

Forbidden to retreat now

Brothers dying now

Bleeding out on the floor now

My eyes close forever

Brothers In Arms

Fighting side by side

Ready to die with no fear.

We shall turn the tide.

First on the battle frontier,

I sense my death coming near.
