Latethissummer,theBCSPCAcommissionedapublicartinstallationtoraisepublicawarenessaroundtheimportanceofspayingandneuteringcats.TheinstallationwasthentakenontheroadthroughouttheVictoriaareainSeptember,showingupatvariousshoppingmallparkinglotstoconnectandengagewiththelocalcommunity.VolunteersfromtheBCSPCAVictoriabranchaswellastheCommunityCouncilwereinvolvedwiththisthroughoutthemonthofSeptember.Theinstallation,whichisportable,isamassivewoodboxmadetolooklikeacardboardbox,andhas“FreeKittens”paintedonit.Thiswouldinvitepeopletolookinsidewheretheywoulddiscovernotkittensbutfactsaboutwhyitissocriticaltospayorneuter.Wegotsomesurprisedreactions!Wefoundmanypeoplewantedtotalktous,whetherrainorshine,anditgeneratedsomegreatconversationsaboutcatsandanimalwelfareoverall.

ItisveryimportanttousattheVictoriaBCSPCAthatournextgenerationbegiventheopportunitytointeractwithandsharetheirpassionforanimals.Ourprogramsarebuilttoencouragetheinnateempathythatareinouryouthandtofosterpositiverelationships.InSeptember,ourpresentationteamofferedalltheschoolsintheVictoria,SookeandSaanichdistrictshalf-pricepresentations,andteacherscameoutinforce!Ourstaffandvolunteerswillbevisitingschoolsthroughoutthefall,educatingaboutempathy,dogsafety,petguardianship,communityaction,farmanimalwelfare,urbanwildlifeandsocialjusticeissues.Ifyouareinterestedinbeingapresenter,oryouandyourdogwouldbeinterestedinaccompanyingoneofourtrainedpresenters,pleasecontactBreeannaMcDonald,bmcdonald@spca.bc.catofindouthowtogetstarted.Ourprogramsattheshelterhavebegunagain!TheprovincialholidayonOctober20thwillsee16kids,betweentheagesof8and11,learningallaboutdogs!Fromhumanetraining,tobreeds,tosignalsandmore,ourparticipantswillfinishthedaywithabroaderknowledgeofourcaninefriends.October21stwillkickoffourfirstServiceSaturdayprogramforthoseages12to15!Participantswillgetataskofwhatittakestobeavolunteer,lendingahandwithonevolunteeractivity,creatingtoysforthesmallanimalsandvisitingoutshelteranimals!ThisprogramwillcontinuethroughouttheschoolyearonSaturdays.Interestedinournextone?Visitspca.bc.ca/workshoptoseeupcomingdatesandtoregister.Wewouldliketosendoutabigthankyoutoalltheyouthwhohaveadvocatedandfundraisedforouranimals!MoreandmoreweareseeingcommunitymindedyouthchoosingtodonateandhelptheanimalsinourshelterandthecommunityandhighlightthemonourFacebookpage.FollowtheVictoriaBranchonFacebooktoseealltheirwonderfulfacesandthankthemwithus.
