Student undertakes relevant work in the workplace as part of their programme of learning
Students are supervised by an academic supervisor (who is appointed for you at the start of the semester) as well as the workplace/ host organisation supervisor
The student, host & academic supervisor collaboratively assess whether work and learning outcomes have been achieved
Co- Operative Learning Experience
• Gain a better understanding of how to function effectively within an organisation in your chosen career or sector of industry
• Apply theory to practice to complete tasks and projects
• Practise and develop interpersonal skills e.g. communication

A compulsory level 7 BBus course
Completed in the final semester of BBus degree
An opportunity to explore real life work by taking on a project and work tasks for a minimum of 220 hours in the workplace over a 10 -12 week period (approx 3 days per week) during the semester
The Industry Based Learning 30 credit course
BBus: A minimum of 285 credits related to your major in the Bachelor of Business degree GradDipBus: A good academic record ( Avg B) and email permission from programme leader to enrolment co-ordinator GradDipProfAcc:A minimum of 45 credits in the GDPA
What are the prerequisites for IBL?
A 15 credit IBL involves a minimum of an110 hour project only ( work tasks not included)
The project must be completed in the workplace.
The project should typically run over a 10 -12 week period (approx 1.5 days per week) during the semester
What is the IBL 15 credits all about?
A 15 credit IBL course is for:
BBus students who are currently in full-time work related to their major ( you still need to complete another 15 credit level 7 paper in your major)
BBus students who only need 15 credits to complete their degree
Double major BBus students may apply to complete a 15 credit IBL
Who is the IBL 15 credits for?
The application form for the15 credit IBL can be found on the BBus Programme home page on Moodle under the IBL tab
The form must be approved and signed off by the BBus Programme Leader: Maura Kempin or Kenneth Newlands
If I am a BBus student how do I apply for the 15 credit IBL?
A 15 credit IBL course is also available for students who are completing related qualifications such as the GradDipBus
GradDipBus students need to seek written permission ( an email) from their Programme Leaders before attempting to complete step 3 of the enrolment process

You will need to find a suitable organisation with appropriate work and supervision

Step 1 : Complete the online Registration form on the
BBus Programme Home Page on Moodle (guest access is available for non BBus students or if you are not currently enrolled in a course).
Once we have received your registration of interest we will check your academic record to see if you meet the pre-requisite credits related to your degree ( Might need to wait for official results)
How do you enrol in IBL?
Step 2: Create your CV using the templates
provided on Moodle ( BBus Home Page) Submit to the Careers Centre for approval
by 30th October ( Your approval will be recorded by the Career Centre on the Registration Spreadsheet)

How do you enrol in IBL?
Step 3: Find an organisation that will host you for your IBL
course Complete the Enrolment and Placement Plan form
with the help of the organisation. A blank form and an example can be found on the BBus Programme Home Page on Moodle (Topic 4)
The form can be emailed to your prospective host/work supervisor before your meeting and completed together at the meeting. The form needs to be signed by both yourself (first page) and your host/work supervisor ( last page)
Note : Once your enrolment and placement plan form is completed and signed please scan as a one page pdf and email to ibl@unitec.ac.nz attention by the 16th February.

How do you enrol in IBL?
Step 4 : Go to the BBus Programme Home Page on
Moodle and complete the on-line Placement Plan ( key details) form
We will need both the signed form and the on-line form completed before we can approve your enrolment
Once your enrolment has been approved you will be notified by email and your enrolment will be completed by Administration
How do you enrol in IBL?
Final deadline to complete the 4 step enrolment process is Tuesday 16th February 2016
Please submit before the deadline to avoid enrolment delays and stress ( you may have to amend your Enrolment and Placement plan form)

First log-in to Moodle (There is a guest log-in for all Unitec students)

Where can I find information and forms for IBL?
One assessment (An e-portfolio using WordPress) of 3 learning outcomes to be submitted at end of week 13

IBL Assessment
Projects are once-off pieces of work involving a number of activities (including research and critical thinking skills) that must be completed within a given time frame. For IBL you will be required to write a report on your project.
Examples : Evaluate or document an accounting system and write up a report on your findings and recommendations by 28 May 2016
What is a project?
Accountancy examples:
◦ Evaluate and make recommendations on the procedures and reporting of cash flows
◦ Improve financial efficiency and reporting by better utilisation of the company’s accounting system
◦ Develop a procedures manual for the accounts payable personnel
◦ Compile a report of the latest regulations for fringe benefit tax for your organisation.
What type of projects can be completed for IBL?
Finance examples:
◦ Document the entity’s financial risk management policies and procedures and recommend improvements
◦ Evaluate the entity’s foreign exchange risk and recommend improvements for FX management
◦ Analyse the entity’s capital structure and calculate the cost of capital

Marketing
◦ A Market research project◦ Develop a marketing plan◦ Develop and implement a social media plan ◦ Assist in a product launch◦ Develop or evaluating a direct marketing
opportunity or promotional plan
What type of projects can be completed for IBL?
Management
◦ Develop/research a business plan or part of one for your organisation
◦ Develop/evaluate an operational policy or procedure
◦ Develop evaluate aspects of HRM policies and procedures e.g. induction, training, recruitment etc
◦ Document information flows e.g blueprinting/flowcharts
What type of projects can be completed for IBL?
Day to day routine work related to your industry
Accountancy example: Completing GST returns, accounts payable and accounts receivable
What is a work task?
Be relevant to your major e.g. HR, Marketing & Sales etc
Be appropriate for a level 7 business student to demonstrate their intellectual, personal and interpersonal abilities
Be of value to the organisation – meeting a clear need and having clearly defined objectives
Criteria for project and work tasks
Working on your project + writing your project report + completing your work tasks should = approximately 220 hours if you are completing a 30 credit IBL

Attend 5 compulsory workshops ( a register will be taken at each) for the first five weeks of the semester (See BBus timetable for the room number) and 1 compulsory workshop in week 11
Wednesdays at 3-5:30pm and a repeat at 6-8:30pm

You are responsible for finding your own placement using a CV that has been approved by the Careers Centre

You may not work for members of your own family or close friends
The organisation should consist of more than one member
You should not be paying a fee to work for free

struggled to connect with employers – “sir” “madam”, using very formal English
• Spoke to Unitec staff and Career Centre Advisor about making a good first impression with NZ employers.
• Sourced appropriate formal clothing for interviews
• Researched industry and got familiar with his CV – well versed with experiences and motivations
• Practiced mock interviews and got feedback about his tone and knowledge of Ops Mgmt.
