How it started• Following the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan, the

Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC) initiated a innovation project funded by the Dutch government.

• Objectives:

- An innovation symposium bringing universities, industry and humanitarian world together

- A pilot project with cardboard shelter and wood gasification stoves

3 day symposium hosted by the Technical University of Eindhoven, november ‘07

• University- Industrial design / product development, architecture

• Business- Multinationals (Philips, DSM), tent manufacturers,

inventors

• Humanitarian organisations- IFRC, RCs and Dutch NGO’s

Hard shell sheltering: cardboard

• 1st prototype developed by Calamatic (10 m2)

• Standard industrial 2 ply cardboard (7mm).

• Surface is coated for fire and water protection.

• Calamatic developed 2 models:- Economic, regtangular model- Rondo, octagone model

• Self assembly by beneficiaries- Both models come in 2 boxes, 220x250x10

cm, weight 40 kg/box
