INPUT & OUTPUT DEVICE

INPUT & OUTPUT HARDWRE

• Input hardware consist of devices that translate data into computer readable form.

• On the other hand, Output hardware consist of devices that translate information processed by the computer into a human understandable form.

INPUT DEVICES

• Keyboard Scanner

• Mouse Bar Code Reader

• Trackball MICR

• Pointing Stick Sensor

• Touchpad OMR

• Touch Screen OCR

• Light pen Web-Cam

• Digitizer DigitalCamera&Flash chip.

KeyboardA keyboard typically has 101 or 105

keys.

Keyboard

• A device use to input text and characters by depressing buttons.

• Actually it is a way to input letters or numbers into different applications or programs.

• A keyboard also has special keys that help operate the computer.

Mouse

Mouse

• A mouse is a pointing device used to move a pointer on the screen and to make selections. The mouse is used to open and close files. The bottom of a mouse has a rotating ball or an optical sensor that tracks movement and controls the location of the pointer.

Optical Mouse

Uses light to determine mouse motion.

Mechanical mouse

• Computer mouse that contains a metal or rubber ball on its under side. When the ball is rolled in any direction, sensors inside the mouse detect this motion and move the on-screen mouse pointer in the same direction.

Variation of Mouse.

• Trackball : is movable ball, that can be rotated using your fingers or palm.

• Pointing Stick: Looks like a pencil eraser. It can be moved with your finger.

• It is basically used in Laptop.

• Touchpad: is a small, flat surface over which you slide your finger, using the same movement you would with mouse.

• Touch Screen: is a video display screen that can be used as to receive input from the touch of a finger.

• Touch screen is popularly used in ATMs.

Touch Screen

• Light pen: is a light sensitive pen like device which allow users to enter handwriting and marks onto a screen by means of a pen like stylus rather than typing on a keyboard.

• Digitizer: It is an electronic pen which can convert drawings and photos to digital data.

• Scanner: is an input device which can translate images of text, drawings, photos and the like into digital form.

BAR CODE READER

• Bar Code:

The vertical zebra-striped marks on most manufactured retail product.

BAR CODE READER

• Barcode Reader: are optical scanners that can translate the symbols in the bar code into digital code.

BAR CODE READER

MICR

• Magnetic Character Recognition (MICR):

It can read the strange looking numbers printed at the bottom of the checks.

MICR

OMR

• Optical Mark Recognition:

Device that can read pencil marks and converts them into computer usable form.

Common Use: SAT Exam, GRE Exam.

OMR

OCR

• Optical Character Recognition:

Device that can read preprinted character in a particular font and converts them into digital code.

• Web-Cam: A camera attaches to a computer used to record moving image that can be posted on a website in real time.

• Sensor: It is a input device that collects specific data directly from the environment and transmits it to a computer. It can be used to detect speed, movement, weight, pressure, temperature, wind, smoke, shapes etc.

OUTPUT DEVICE

Output can be of Two types

Softcopy

Hardcopy

Other

Softcopy Output Device

• Monitor: Display the output. It can be of two types[1] CRT Monitor: Cathode Ray tube Monitor[2] Flat Panel Monitor: Liquid crystal display, Plasma, LED.

• Projector: is an output device used to project information on to a large screen.

CRT Monitor

CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors use phosphorescent dots to create the pixels that make up display images.

LCD

Flat Panel Monitors: Flat panel monitors usually use LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) or plasma to create output. Light is passed through liquid crystals to create the pixels.

Hardcopy Output Device

• Printer: output device that can prints character, symbol, graphics etc on paper or other hardcopy medium.

• Dot-Matrix Printer• Laser Printer• Ink-Jet Printer• Plotter• Multifunctional Printers.

• Dot matrix: Dot matrix printers use a print head to imbed images on a surface, using an ink ribbon.

• Ink jet: Inkjet printers spray tiny dots of ink on a surface to create an image.

• Laser: Laser printers use toner drums that roll through magnetized pigment and then transfer the pigment to a surface.

Plotter Plotters create a hard copy rendition of a digitally rendered design. The design is sent to the plotter via a graphics card, and creates the design using a pen. Generally used with engineering applications, plotters basically draw an image using a series of straight lines.

OTHER OUTPUT DEVICE

• Sound output Device: Speaker.

• Video Output Device: Photographic images that are played at 15-29 frames per second to give the appearance of full motion.
