1B’s Rubbish Inquiry

How much rubbish is in our school and What can we do

about it?Maybe we could pick it up...

Did that work? No, because two weeks later we picked up rubbish again and there were

more than 300 pieces!

So we thought of some ideas about what else we can do to solve the problem. We came up with some

amazing ideas...* create a ‘pick up rubbish’ performance for assembly * make signs for the rubbish bins

* recycle rubbish * make posters * compost our food scraps * each grade could do a rubbish walk once a week * give out awards for children who pick up rubbish

* ask the JSC if they have any ideas * ask the Environmental Captains if they have any ideas

* stop dropping rubbish * ask Ms Jackson if we can talk at assembly * ask teachers to remind their grades not to drop rubbish

* push rubbish bins around so kids can put rubbish in

* create a ‘pick up rubbish’ performance for assembly * make signs for the rubbish bins 6

*recycle rubbish 1 * make posters 6 * compost our food scraps 5

* each grade could do a rubbish walk once a week 8 * give out awards for children who pick up rubbish 11

* ask the JSC if they have any ideas * ask the Environmental Captains if they have any ideas 9

*stop dropping rubbish * ask Ms Jackson if we can talk at assembly 8

* ask teachers to remind their grades not to drop rubbish 4 * push rubbish bins around so kids can put rubbish in

We crossed out ideas that we couldn’t do or that wouldn’t work and voted on the other ideas...

Now we can work our way through our list!

Mrs Bennett also noticed lots of rubbish in Lara. Next time you’re walking around Lara, see how much rubbish you

spot.

We also used Google images and discovered that rubbish is a world wide problem.

Is this what we want for our school?

Is this what we want for our Lara?

Is this what we want for our world?

We made posters for every grade in the school. Here they are...

We wrote letters and Mrs Bennett sent them as emails to every teacher in the

school, asking if we could share our posters.

We were so excited when the teachers replied to our emails!

Our buddies helped us to share our posters.

We made litter letters to put around the school. We laminated some rubbish and Mrs Bennett cut out the letters for C A R E, T H I N K and W H Y ?

From this...

...to this...

...to this...

We spoke at assembly and told everyone about our litter letters and awards. Everyone had a turn!

We made awards for children we saw picking up litter. They put their name and grade in a box in our room and some

lucky children won a prize! (But the environment was the real winner!)

We learnt about composting at Serendip. Composting is when food is put in a special bin where it is eaten by worms, instead of being thrown in the bin. Worms eat the food when it breaks down and in

becomes healthy soil to add to your garden.

Hi, my name is __________ and this is 1B. We have been learning about rubbish at

our school, in Lara and around the world. We’ve noticed a lot of ________ rubbish dropped around Lara and we’d love it if

you could put this poster up on your window somewhere. Thank you.

We went for a walk around Lara and delivered posters for shops to put in their windows.

This is where

we delivered posters...

This is what we said...

Here we are in action...

How did we go? Let’s look at ideas again...

What an achievement!

Lara PS, Lara SC and Lara shops

Did we make a difference?

On the second last day of school we went for a walk around our school and collected rubbish again. This

time we counted 191 pieces. We were sad!

But when we had a good think about it, we weren’t quite so sad. Why not?

1) 191 is less than 300 or 400 (but still too many!). 2) most of the rubbish was found at the high school end of the oval. 3) the playground areas looked really tidy before we started. See for

yourself!

So we think that we HAVE made a difference at Lara Primary School! Keep putting your rubbish in the bin everyone!
