Important Safety Information
Look for Safety SymbolThe SAFETY ALERT SYMBOL indicates there is apotential hazard to personal safety involved and extrasafety precaution must be taken. When you see thissymbol, be alert and carefully read the message thatfollows it. In addition to design and configuration ofequipment, hazard control and accident prevention aredependent upon the awareness, concern, prudence andproper training of personnel involved in the operation, transport, maintenance and storage of equipment.
Be Aware of Signal WordsSignal words designate a degree or level of hazardseriousness.
DANGER indicates an imminently hazardous situationwhich, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. This signal word is limited to the most extreme situations, typically for machine components that, for functionalpurposes, cannot be guarded.
WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situationwhich, if not avoided, could result in death or seriousinjury, and includes hazards that are exposed whenguards are removed. It may also be used to alert againstunsafe practices.
CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situationwhich, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderateinjury. It may also be used to alert against unsafepractices.
Prepare for Emergencies Be prepared if a fire starts
Keep a first aid kit and fire extinguisher handy.
Keep emergency numbers for doctor, ambulance, hospitaland fire department near phone.
Wear Protective Equipment Wear protective clothing and equipment.
Because prolonged exposure to loud noise can causehearing impairment or hearing loss, wear suitablehearing protection such as earmuffs or earplugs.
Because working on equipment safely requires your fullattention, avoid wearing entertainment headphones whileperform the installation.
Be Familiar with Safety Decals Read and understand “Safety Decals” in the Operator

Before You StartMost accidents are the result of negligence andcarelessness, usually caused by failure of the operator tofollow simple but necessary safety precautions. Allow noone to install the small seeds option before carefullyreading this manual.
Some fasteners may be loosely assembled. Removethem before mounting that component. Due to evolvingmanufacturing practices, some sub-assemblies mayalready be completely pre-assembled. If so, check thatfasteners are tight, and skip the unneeded assemblysteps.
Tools Required• Basic hand tools, including hose clamp pliers
• Drill and 11/32 inch, Q, or 8.3 mm drill bit
• Scaffold or ladderTorque values for fasteners are shown on page 35.
1. Read and understand “Important SafetyInformation” starting on page 1.
2. Ensure drill is compatible with kit. See page 3.
Prepare Drill3. If the drill to be updated has a Fertilizer box, clean
out the box per the instructions in the current drillOperator Manual.
4. Position the drill in a well lighted location suitable forthe installation. A clear surface beneath makes iteasier to recover any dropped parts.

Operations
Loading SeedSeed may be loaded in the field or prior to transport.Fully loaded with dense seed, the drill can weigh anadditional 8294 pounds (3762 kg). Include this weightwhen checking tractor capability.
The drill must be hitched for seed loading. Themainframe may be raised or lowered. Lowered placesthe walkboards closer to the ground, reducing effortwhen manually loading bagged seed. If equipped withladders, swing them down.
Small Seeds Box Loading1. If loading prior to transport, and calibration has not
yet been done, set Seed Rate Handles to 0. At 0, noseed can leak during transport.
2. Take all necessary materials safety precautions if theseed is treated.
3. Load seed evenly into seed boxes.
4. To reduce wear, remove main shaft drive chains formain seed boxes.
Fluted-feed materials, such as Small Seeds andFertilizer, do not require lubricants.
Small Seeds RateSeeding rate from the optional Small Seeds Attachmentis controlled entirely by seed rate handles on each smallseeds box. No sprocket changes are required, and smallseeds rate is unaffected by settings for main seed box.
Refer to Figure 39
To set Small Seeds rate, loosen the wing nut at eachhandle, and adjust the lever position. Tighten nut.

Small Seeds Rate CalibrationDifferences will exist between the tested seed and fieldconditions used to generate the Small Seeds RateCharts, and your seed and conditions. To accuratelyachieve your target population, Great Plainsrecommends calibrating.
Perform the calibration with the drill raised for transport, but with the opener frames lowered (if the openers areraised, the clutches will disengage). Leave the tractorhitched for movement control. Block the tires not beingused in the calibration.
If you have previously calibrated your acremeter (seeOperator Manual), you can use it to tally acres.
1. Jack up the left-hand drive gauge wheel assemblyuntil the left-hand section is roughly level. Use blocksto ensure that the section cannot fall if the jackrelaxes, tips over or fails.
2. Rotate the gauge wheels and check that the drivesand seed cups are engaged, working properly andfree from foreign material. If not already done, setthe Small Seeds Rate Handle. If fertilizer is loaded, remove the fertilizer drive chain (unless you aresimultaneously calibrating fertilizer rate).
3. Clear the FIELD ACRES to 0000.0 on the electronicacremeter, unless you do not plan to rely on it for thecalibration.
4. Check that your gauge-wheel tires are265/70B16.5 NHS Skid Steer and properly inflated.See “Tire Inflation Chart” in Operator Manual.
5. Record the weight of one to three empty containerscollectively large enough to hold seed metered for6% of one acre.
6. Place several pounds of seed over three seed cupson the outside end of the left-hand drill box. Pulllower end seed hoses off of these drops at theopener end.
7. Turn gauge wheel several times to fill seed cups.Turn until seed drops to ground from each hose.
8. Place empty container(s) under the three hoses togather metered seed.
9. Turn gauge wheel until one acre is tallied onacremeter (130 wheel rotations). While turning, check that cups have ample seed coming into them.
10. Weigh metered seed. Subtract initial weight ofcontainer(s).
Crushing Hazard:You may be severely injured or killed by being crushed from afalling implement or openers. Always have transport locks inplace and frame sufficiently blocked up when working on thedrill.
For example:using a row spacing of:
7.5inrow count:
63you desire to plant alfalfa at:
10 pounds per acre;this corresponds to an initial Seed Rate Handle of:
50
For example:three 0.5 pound (8 oz.) containers weigh:
1.5 lbs
For example:the three containers weighed a total 2.2 lbs after test:

11. Divide the net seed weight by three. Multiply bynumber of openers on your drill to determine the totalof pounds-per-acre seeded.
12. The Seed Rate Handle scale is a percentage ofmeter opening, and is quite linear near scale center.Calculate a new scale setting based on the test.
You may want to repeat calibration procedure if yourresults varied greatly from the Seed Rate Chart, or ifyou must operate near the ends of the Seed Ratehandle scale (0-20 or 90-100).
13. Set the center and right-hand drill sections to matchthe now-calibrated left-hand section.
14. With calibration complete, Reinstall fertilizer chain (ifremoved), reconnect seed hoses, and lower gaugewheel to ground.
When drilling, check seeding rate by noting acres drilled, amount of seed added to drill and seed level in drill box.If you are seeding more or less than desired, adjust rateslightly to compensate for field conditions.
For example:a 7.5in drill has 63 rows:

Small Seeds Row Shut-Off
If alternate row spacing is required for small seeds, optional plugs are available to block flow inside the seedbox tray.
1. Clean-out seed. The seed box must be empty priorto inserting plugs. See “Small Seeds BoxClean-Out” on page 31.
2. Before installing plugs, inspect the seed boxes forexisting factory-installed plugs. These are blockingextra unused seed ports. You may want to identifythese plugs with an indelible marker.
3. Insert one plug at each row to shut off. Verify theseed hose path before inserting the plug, as somehoses do not make a strictly vertical drop to their rowunits.
4. Review seed rate settings and marker extensionprior to planting.
When removing plugs to restore rows to operation, besure to not disturb a factory-installed plug.
Small Seed Tube PlugsThis plug stops seed flow from the small seeds box atthe top of a seed tube. Order one per row to set inactive.

possible.
2. To recover remaining seed, place a collection tarpunder the small seeds tubes at the openers.
3. Raise drill.
4. Set seed rate handles to 100.
5. Rotate gauge wheels until no seed flows.
6. If a vacuum cleaner is available, remove anyresidual seed from top of meters.
Chain MaintenanceInspect and lubricate chains regularly. The slack of newchains tends to increase during the first few hours ofoperation due to seating.
Chain SlackCheck slack within the first 8 hours of operation andtighten idlers as necessary.
Refer to Figure 41, which, for clarity, greatly exaggerates slack, and omits the idlers.
1. Measure the span for allowable slack:Locate the longest span of each chain (usually thespan which does not run through the idlers). Theideal slack is between 2% and 4% of the span. For example:A slack of 1 cm is appropriate for a 30 cm span.
2. Measure the current slack :Acting at a right angle to the chain span at the centerof the span, deflect the chain in both directions with aforce of about 9 pounds (4 kg). The slack is thedistance of the movement.
3. Adjust the idlers for ideal slack.
Whenever mounting a chain, make sure the clip at theremovable link is oriented to minimize snags.
Refer to Figure 42
Install clip with open end facing away from direction ofchain travel (shown by gray arrows in chain routingdiagrams).
