Rau Primary School“Original Assignment”

• Rau Primary:- Official language: Swahili / English- Public school- 650 kids (50% male /50% female)- 22 teachers (20 women, 2 men including head of school)

• “Original” Assignment:– Support English-teaching at

Standards 4A-4B (2 classrooms, 35 students each, 12 hours a week)

– Support English teaching at Standard 7 (1 classroom, 110+ students – there is a shortage of classrooms - +/- 6 hours a week)

• Rau Village Cup- Rau Village schools have never played each other, in spite of being only two-kilometers away!

Rau Primary School Projects:Word and Excel workshops for teachers

• Word/Excel workshops:- The school received a donation of four computers four years ago- The computers remained intact and two went out of order (without being used)- Understanding the fundamentals: Two-hour sessions twice a week for three weeks- At the end of this period for the first time students marks were delivered to students´ parent in- print (instead of handwritten)

• In Tanzania Public Schools:- Corporal punishment persist- Negative reinforcement mechanisms prevail- National exams designed by central authority and administered by the school- There is a lack of empathy and identification between teachers and students, very impersonal relationships prevail (v.gr. They ignore each other names)- Kids do everything: Clean the school, download food trucks, prepare tea, buy snacks for teachers, take care of the garden, etc

Rau Primary School Projects:Student Motivation Workshops

• Student Motivation Sessions:- Appoint a “guide teacher” per each classroom that knows his/her students, where they come from (single-parent home, how long they walk in the morning, whether they eat well or not)- Gradually downplay negative reinforcement (particularly corporal punishment) and substitute for positive reinforcement mechanism- Promote a closer relationship between teachers and student (calling each other by their names, contributing in certain activities)
