Introduction to Electricity

A hair-raising look at how electrons flow

Let’s review

- Electric Charge and Static Electricity A magnetic field extends around a magnetized object, out from the north pole and into the south pole. And similarly, an electric field extends out from the positive charge A and into the negative charge B.

In atoms, the positive charges are called protons

In atoms, the negative charges are called electrons

The buildup of electrical charges on an object is known as static electricity. By static, scientists mean that the charges do not flow continuously. Charges can be built up and transferred in 3 ways:

• Friction • Conduction • Induction

- Electric Charge and Static Electricity

Friction – the simplest way Positive or negative charges can build

up in/on an object.

- Electric Charge and Static Electricity

Conduction & Induction are harder to see

- Electric Charge and Static Electricity Today you will make your own electroscope –

an instrument that is used to detect the presence of a charge.
