Why??
“ I want to emphasize that we should not be expecting ourchildren to change the world. Unless we do it, our children
do not have a world to change”.Bill Mollison
"They demonstrate how permaculture can feed a growing population in an environmentally sustainable and socially
responsible manner" the UMass Permaculture Initiative 2012
Who?
● “ We have just began our work as developers. There are villages that we are developing now, but our priority is to train more designers, because we do not have enough people to cope with all that work.”
Bill Mollison
ORIGINS..Permaculture started in 1975 or 1976...
WHY DO THEY THOUGHT THEY NEEDED TO DO SOMETHING THEN?
The real systems that are beginning to fail are the soils, forests, the atmosphere, and nutrient cycles. It is we who are re- sponsible for that. We haven't evolved anywhere in the west (and I doubt very much elsewhere except in tribal areas) any sustainable systems in agriculture or forestry. We don't have a system.
● More than 64 groups the first 4 years in Australia.
WHY DO WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING NOW?
7 billion people14.8 billion hectares of land
5 hectares/person5hc x 7 billion = 35 billion hectares of land needed to feed us = unsustainable KAOS
4.100 h of arable land
ARABLE LAND??
Adequately fertile soil and sufficient rainfall capable of supporting traditional agriculture.. 41 million square km
5% protected areas= protected parks/landscapes, etc..
15 MILLION OF THE REST IS USED ACTUALLY ( FAO )
By 2050 we expect to have 9 billion people
● IF today there is about 2 billion people in the
world in poor stages of hunger and need...
● CAN WE FEED 9 BILLION PEOPLE ?? Can
we make such a radical change in a matter of
40 years???
USA
● Average water usage day/person= 1200 gallons!!!!!
● Going where?? ● How much land loss/year?● How do we loose our soil??● How many planets we need in order to keep
this up??
OUR SOILUnited States loses about 60,000 acres of wetlands each year.
400.000 acres of soil in mono crops like CORN.
10 cm soil/year in every traditional agriculture/garden/industry.
8 cm soil/year in organic gardens/industries.
LOAN of our back/front yards covers
Uses gallon water
1 billion pounds pesticides/year in our soils.
Normal septic soige tanks = N In soil ad waterlands
Our average food travels 1200 miles.
Half our gas consume is imported.
OUR WATER● Only 8% of our total water is in a constant
cycling.● Ground water consume/ only 40% safe.● 1 billion pound pesticides enter our water
sheed every year.● Consume average is 1200 gallons/day/person.● Overload of heavy metals and round 22 million
p N into our ground water.
OUR ENERGY
OUR HAPPINESS
DO WE KNOW WHAT OUR FOOTPRINT IS?
ARE OUR ECONOMY SUSTAINING US ALL?
DO WE KNOW WHAT THE REAL COST OF THINGS ARE??
ARE WE ALL FEELING SUPPORTED AND HEARD??
IS OUR CHILDREN HAPPY?
ARE WE RESILIENT ENOUGH?
● CAN WE BE OK WITHIN KAOS?
HOW FLEXIBLE CAN WE BE?
DO WE FEEL ABUNDANT?
ARE WE LIVING OUR DREAMS??
DO WE LIVE IN A COMMUNITY THAT
SUPPORTS US?
● HOW STRONG CAN WE ALL GET TOGETHER??
CAN WE STRETCH OUR VISION ENOUGH?
DO WE KNOW THE TOOLS AND HOW TO USE THEM?
DO WE UNDERSTAND WHAT
OUR REALITY IS?
DO WE FEEL EMPOWERED?
CAN WE TRANSFORM PAIN AND FRUSTRATION IN
SOLUTIONS?
ARE WE HAPPY?
Do we relate?
Do we learn from patterns?
WHAT DOES CAORDIC MEAN?
CAN WE MAKE USE OF THE KAOS?
EDGE
KAOS
REVOLUTION
EVOLUTION
How do we find SOLUTIONS??
DO WE UNDERSTANDWHAT MEANS TOGETHER?
What do we understand for evolution?
CAN CONTAIN/CONTROLL CHANGE?
CAN WE CONTROL CHANGE?
GROSS NATIONAL HAPPINESSGNH value is proposed to be an index function of the total average per capita of the following measures:
Economic Wellness: Indicated via direct survey and statistical measurement of economic metrics such as consumer debt, average income to consumer price index ratio and income distributionEnvironmental Wellness: Indicated via direct survey and statistical measurement
of environmental metrics such as pollution, noise and traffi cPhysical Wellness: Indicated via statistical measurement of physical health
metrics such as severe illnessesMental Wellness: Indicated via direct survey and statistical measurement of mental
health metrics such as usage of antidepressants and rise or decline of psychotherapy patients
Workplace Wellness: Indicated via direct survey and statistical measurement of labor metrics such as jobless claims, job change, workplace complaints and lawsuits
Social Wellness: Indicated via direct survey and statistical measurement of social metrics such as discrimination, safety, divorce rates, complaints of domestic confl icts and family lawsuits, public lawsuits, crime rates
Political Wellness: Indicated via direct survey and statistical measurement of political metrics such as the quality of local democracy, individual freedom, and foreign confl icts
BASIC HUMAN NEEDS● 50m2 family 4 = all vegetables● 1.5hc family 4 = all food ( fruits, veg, meats,
heat, etc )● 1gallon day/person= drink● 15 gallon day/person= drink, bath, wash, and
grey water on our vegetables.● TO BE LOVED= family/community/world/unity● SHELTER● TO SHARE/TO BE KIND???
BASIC EARTH NEEDS
THE EARTH NEEDS HUMANS TO JUST
“ DO NO HARM ”
How do we change patters?
HUG?

Definition
Integrating systems...
● Organics● Agroforestry● Integrated farming ( regenerative
agriculture.. )● Sustainable development ( alterna currencies,
green housing, education, structures, etc..)● Applied ecology/system ecology
ETHICS
Care for the earth
Care for the people
Share
PRINCIPLES
OBSERVE AND INTERACT
CATCH AND STORE ENERGY
Obtain a yield
Applying self regulating and accepting feedback
Use and value renewable resources/services
Produce no waste
Desigh from patters to details
Integrate dont segregate
Small & slow solutions
Use & value diversity
Use edges/value marginal
Be creative with change
SYNERGIES/HAPPENINGS
● Relationships created among elements by the way they are placed together; the whole becoming greater than the sum of its parts. Permaculture design therefore seeks to minimize waste, human labor, and energy input by building systems with maximal benefits between design elements to achieve a high level of synergy
WHAT REALLY MAKES IT PERMACULTURE??
NONE DIG GARDENS
NONE TIL ORCHADS
NATURAL FARMING/FUKUOKA
KEYLINE
REGENERATES
HOLISTIC MANAGEMENTS
DO WE UNDERSTEAND WHAT MEANS TOGETHER?
DO WE UNDERSTAND WHAT SUSTAINBLE MEANS??
Un sistema es sostenible
cuando crea/almacena
más energía/materia en su vida
de lo que se necesita
para crearlo y mantenerlo
(Manual del Diseñador, Bill Mollison)
CAN OUR FUTURE BE LIKE THIS?
SECRETS OF THE HAPPIEST/HEALTHIER/WITH ELDE
PEOPLE ON EARTH● GROW YOUR OWN FOOD● LIVE CLOSE TO NATURE● BE CLOSE TO FAMILY/FRIENDS● CELEBRATE/SHARE/MUSIC● HAVE OLDERS ROUND
= ENJOY/TAKE CARE/DO NOT HARM
