I. Rise of Nationalism• A. While most Europeans

disliked Napoleon, many admired what he had accomplished

• What did Napoleon accomplish?

• B. His empire, along with the French Revolution, inspired the idea of nationalism

I. Rise of Nationalism

• C. Nationalism is the idea that people identify themselves as a part of a community defined by the same language, government, and culture. This community is called a nation.

• D. Before nationalism, people would be loyal to their king, town, or region. Now, their loyalty is to their people

I. Rise of Nationalism• E. Nationalism led to the

unification of German and Italian people under one nation and one government.

• 1. Germans were united because of their leader Otto von Bismarck, who led the strong Prussian military to victories over Austria and France, uniting the German people.

feared that France would seek revenge.• B. In order to protect itself, it made an

alliance with Austria – Hungary• What is an alliance?• 1. Germany, Austria – Hungary, and their

allies were known as the Central Powers• This made Germany even more powerful.

themselves from these nations, Britain, France and Russia also created an alliance.

said that a country should do what is best for itself, not what is best for the world

• B. Alliances (Allied Powers vs. Central Powers)

• C. Militarism – the building up of a military

• 1. Nations involved in these alliances began militarism in preparation for a war.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand

• 1. Ferdinand was to be the next ruler over Austria – Hungary

• 2. He was assassinated by a group of people who wanted independence for Serbia (which had an alliance with Russia)

Hungary declared war on Serbia, Russia declared war on Austria – Hungary

• 1. The rest of Europe soon declared war on each other

fronts• Germany and Austria

Hungary battled Russia and their allies in the east while Germany fought France, Britain, and later the United States in the west

• B. Eventually, both fronts came to a stalemate

• 1. Stalemate – when both sides of a contest are neither winning nor losing

• Stalemate = tie

of the Russian people, a group called the Bolsheviks killed the Russian Czar (king) and his family

• 2. The Bolsheviks were a political party that supported the idea of communism

• Communism is a form of government introduced by Karl Marx

form of government where all economic and social aspects are controlled by the government and all property and money are evenly distributed to the people

• 3. Under the Bolsheviks and communism, Russia is now known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR)

Lenin• 4. This revolution eliminated Russia from the

war• E. With the Russians gone, now the Central

Powers only needed to fight on the western front

threat, governments used propaganda to get more troops and additional help from their citizens.

American troops replenished the Allies and they were able to ultimately defeat Germany and the Central Powers in 1918
