MSc Students of the Department of Chemistry under the able guidance of Prof ChSarala
Devi, Head, Department of Chemistry and with Prof D Ashok, Director, RDCC and a senior
professor in organic chemistry as the convener are organizining "Scientia" a Programme with
regard to National Science Day celebrations on the 26th February 2019. The programme is
conducted under the UGC-UPE-FAR programme at the Department of Chemistry for UG
students of Science from various constituent and affiliated colleges under OU.
The Programme is intended to inspire and educate through entertainment and develop
scientific feel among the young students. National Science Day is celebrated every year on
the 28th February to commemorate the greatest discovery of "Raman Effect" by Sir CV
Raman who received a Noble prize in physics on this day in 1930. Since 1986 this day is
celebrated as National Science Day in his honour. Department of Chemistry also celebrates
the day with great zeal and enthusiasm every year with a spectrum of events to excite the
students and to inculcate a better understanding and liking towards discipline of science to
take it as a career.
This year theme of National science day is "Science for people and people for science" which
is chosen as the topic for e-poster competition, one of the events in Scientia. A general
Science quiz is conducted for the registered participants from various under graduate
colleges. The other event which is conducted in parallel to e-poster is Just-A-Minute talk on
various topics relating to science allotted to the individual contestants.
The winners shall be awarded with exciting prizes and certificates. All other participants shall
also be given participation certificates.
The inaugural of the programme at 9:30 was graced by Prof Shivaraj, Dean, Development
and UGC affairs as the Chief Guest and Prof K Pratap Reddy, Principal, Univ. College of
Science and Prof B Sathyanarayana, President, OUTA as guests of honour. Prof
ChSaralaDevi, Head, Dept. of Chemistry presided over the function. Prof D Ashok, the
convener of the programme welcomed the participants and elaborated on the theme of the
programme followed by messages by the Guests.
The valedictory session started at 4:30 pm after an Inspirational Talk by Dr G V
Ramanjaneyulu, Executive Director, Centre for Sustainable Agriculture, Hyderabad from
3:30-4:30 pm. He was also the guest of honour along with Prof ChVenkataramana Devi,
Dean, Faculty of Science, OU and Prof Shivaraj, Dean, UGC Affairs as other guests of
honour. Prof ChGopal Reddy, Registrar, OU was the chief guest of the valedictory to present
the prizes and certificates to students. The winners were awarded with exciting prizes and
certificates. All other participants were given participation certificates. About 300 students
from 30 colleges have participated in the events. The students of Kasturba Gandhi College
for women, Secunderabad bagged the first prize in Science Quiz and students of St.Francis
College, Begumpet won the second and third prizes. In the Just-a-minute event first prize was
won by the student from Sri Sai Degree College, Dilshuknagar, 2nd prize by student of St.
Francis College for Women,Begumpet, 3rd by student of Sri Sai Degree College,
Dilshuknagarand two consolation prizes by students of Kasturba Gandhi College for
Women,Secunderabad. The team from RBVRR college for women won the 1st prize in e-
poster presentation, 2nd prize by students from, Kasturba Gandhi College for Women and the
third prize was bagged by students from St.Pious College for women, Nacharam.
