Overview

• Why did we go to OpenRoads?

• How is OpenRoads being rolled out?

• OpenRoads Introduction for Iowa DOT

• What is new?

• What has changed?

• What is the same?

• Workspace overview

Why OpenRoads

• New Geometry tools make editing easier

• Rule based geometry

• Civil Cells

• Design Standards in software

• New reporting features

• 3D modeling made & updated faster

• Support for legacy products is diminishing

How is OpenRoads being rolled out?

• Only new projects.

• As of October 2016 all new survey projects are SS4

• Existing corridor projects will be evaluated separately

• Timeframe to next upcoming Letting

• How long project will continue

• Is staff prepared to convert to OpenRoads

• Projects with a Letting date prior to January 2018 with significant work already completed will not be converted.

What is New

• Workflow

• File & element naming conventions

• Informal instructions through Project Explorer

• Civil reporting

• Civil Standards

• Terrains

• Feature Definitions

• Civil Cells

Workflow: New Files

• See Design Manual section 20D-101 for further details.

• New naming convention (geolocated files only): CCRRRPPPGGG (See 20B-45)

New File Prefixes

Workflow: Element Naming

• 20D-102 created to establish naming conventions for geometric elements

• Maintain legacy rules for geometric elements

Instructional Documents

• Providing links to instructions directly from MicroStation

• Project Explorer will contain Iowa DOT & Bentley documents.

Instructional Documents

Instructional Documents

Civil Reporting

• New tool to Geopak taken from InRoads

• Iowa DOT developing custom reports to fill out Tabulations

Civil Reporting

• Tabs. 101-16 & 101-17 now created from Civil Reports

• No longer in Microstation derived from .GPK

• Will develop more Tabs from Civil Reports in the future.

Custom DOT Civil Reports

Terrains

Civil Standards

• Give warnings when geometry violates design standards

• Iowa uses AASHTO design standards

Civil Standards

Feature Definitions

• Split up in several DGNLIBs

• Survey

• Survey Features

• Terrain Display

• Photo

• Terrain Display

• Design

• Modeling

• Plan Drafting

• Terrain Display

Feature Definitions

Civil Cells

• Few Iowa specific currently developed.

• More to come.

What has changed

• Survey/Photo Files

• Geometry (tools)

• Corridor Modeling

• Drainage Design

• Cross Sections

New Survey/Photo Files

Geometry Changes

• No more COGO geometry.

• Not auto-annotating centerlines.

• Only exporting to .GPK for sheeting & annotating P&P sheets.

Modeling

• Corridor Modeler GUI is no more.

• Using combination of Site modeler & Corridor modeler tools going forward.

Drainage Design

• SUE/SUDA tools still being developed

• Geopak Drainage will still be used until SUDA is finished

Cross Sections

• Cross sections created differently.

• Anything drawn in 3D will show up in XS.

What is the Same

• Sheeting (kind of)

• Printing

• Earthwork calculation (for now)

• AMG deliverables

OpenRoads Sheeting

• Motif files still utilized

• Relies on antiquated .GPK file

• Plan elements need to be drawn the same, just in TXT file

• Sheet files have .DGN file extension & SHT_ prefix to file name.

OpenRoads Printing

• Print Organizer remains the printing tool for OpenRoads

OpenRoads Earthwork

• Relies on input files for now.

• Investigating new tools for future deployment.

• XS need to be on correct features.

AMG Deliverables

• Still producing LandXML (alignments & surfaces) and 3D line strings files.

• Using new tools to create the files.

• Instructional document available through Project Explorer.

Workspace Overview

• Network Workspace was made available 11/1/2016 on Automation Tools website (http://www.iowadot.gov/design/automation.htm).

Network Workspace overview

• Delivered as single self contained download.

• Variables specific to network/computer will be changed to configure the workspace.

ProjectWise workspace

• ProjectWise managed workspace available on folders for OpenRoads projects.

• DOT uses dual install of SS2 & SS4.

• uStation: 08.11.09.714

• Geopak SS2: 08.11.07.629 (DOT Priority Build)

• Geopak SS4: 08.11.09.845

• Workspace internally opens correct software based on workspace.
