detailedaccountofourworkandprogress.Thisdocumentrepresentstheverylatestactivities
oftheIRISCenter.Readonformoreinformationabouteverythingthattookplaceoverthelast
threemonths.
SPECIALNOTICE,IRIS@2.4MILLION:During2018,therewere2,376,830visitstotheWebsite,
aremarkableincreaseof13.54%comparedto2017.Thisnumberisallthemoreextraordinary
whenthebrieftrafficslowdownduetotheimplementationoftheEuropeanUnion’snewGDPR
dataregulationlegislation(seebelow)istakenintoaccount.MoredetailedIRISWebsiteuser
datacanbefoundintheEvaluationsectionbelow.PROJECTINFRASTRUCTURE:IRISisengagedinacontinuousefforttoimproveandexpandthequalityandreachofIRISresourcesthroughongoinginfrastructuredevelopmentandenhancement.
Þ WebsiteProgrammingUpdates&Improvements:Manyofthemostsignificant
improvementstotheIRISWebsitehappen“behindthescenes”attheprogramming
levelandarethereforevirtuallyinvisibletoourusersandvisitors.Whetherimmediately
noticeableornot,however,theseadjustmentsandfinetuningsareindispensabletoa
smoothrunning,user-friendlyonlineexperience.Alogofsomeofourmostsignificant
recentactivitiesfollows.
v GDPR-CompliantDataAlert:RecentmajorchangestotheEuropeanUnion’s
onlinedataprivacypolicies(GeneralDataProtectionRegulation,orGDPR)
havenecessitatedasignificantlydifferentapproachtothewayWebsiteslike
oursapproachtheissueofuserprivacyanddatamanagement,specifically
theuseof“cookies,”smallinformationfilesthathelpcomputerskeeptrack
ofuservisitsandactivities.Beginningthisquarter,visitorstotheIRIS
Websitewillbepresentedwithapop-upwindowalertingthemtothefact
thatthesiteusescookiesandinformingthemthatcontinuingtousetheIRIS
Websiteconstitutestheirconsentforustodoso.Onceusershave“optedin”
byclickingabutton,thepop-upwindowwillnotappearduringsubsequent
visits.

dependenceonpluginstorunaudioandvideoelementsontheIRISsite.This
change,implementedduringthewinterbreak,reformattedallaudioand
videocodingontheIRISsitetouseWordpress’corefunctions,drastically
reducinguserissuesrelatedtooutdatedormissingplugins.Allcaptioning
resourcesforourvideoshavelikewisebeenreconfiguredtofunctioninthis
newenvironment.
v jQueryMigration:ThemigrationoftheIRISjavascriptenvironmenttothe
jQuerylibrariesiscomplete.AllrelativeinteractivefeaturesoftheIRISsite
arenowimplementingthenativeWordpressjQueryinstallation.
v AnAPPforThat:IncoordinationwithAngelicaFulchini,theIRISTechnologyInnovationPostdoctoralScholar,weareintheinformation-collectingstage
toidentifymobileappsinconjunctionwithspecificIRISresourcesthatmight
beofusetoteachers.Wewillalsodevelopuser-friendlywaystoalertour
visitorstotheseoutsideapps,aswellasexplainhowtheymightbestput
themtouseintheirowninstruction.Finally,IRISisstillexploringtheuseof

Þ DataPrivacyPolicy:Vanderbilt’sincreasedrequirementsforPersonalCreditIndustry
(PCI)compliance,requirethatWPEngine,theIRISWebsitehost,provideanAttestation
ofCompliance(AoC).AlthoughallsecuritystandardsaremetviatheGooglecloudon
whichthesiteishosted,WPEnginedoesnotprovideAoCs.Asaresult,IRISisworkingto
ensurethatourWebsitemeetsPCICompliancefornow,andlookingintooptionsforour
CertificatesofCompletionthatdonotrequireonlinecreditcarduse.
PRODUCTDEVELOPMENT:IRISdevelopsonlineresourcesaboutevidence-basedinstructionalandbehavioralpracticestohelpimprovetheeducationoutcomesofallstudents,particularlystrugglinglearnersandthosewithdisabilities.Createdwiththeassistanceofmanyofthetopexpertsintheirfields,IRISresources—whethermodules,casestudies,COREcontentunits,ormanyothers—areinnovative,interactive,andpracticalforuseincollegeanduniversitycoursework,byPDproviders,andbyteachersintoday’sclassrooms.NewResources:Anewprojectcyclebringswithitnewconceptsforeffectiveresourcesaboutevidence-basedpracticesasIRISworkstomeettheevolvingneedsofeducatorsintoday’s
classrooms.

accommodationsdifferfromotherkindsofinstructionaladaptations,definesthe
fourcategoriesofaccommodations,anddescribeshowtoimplement
accommodationsandevaluatetheireffectivenessforindividualstudents.This
updatedmodulewillreplacethepreviousversioninourIRISPDOptionssection
duringthenewquarter.
