Iron Age roundhouses probably had roofs made from thatch, using wheat straw or reeds.

Because the thatch rots away, there is not much evidence available, but archaeologists think this is how they were made; if they had been made from tiles, we would have seen evidence of the tiles on Iron Age sites.

Members from each team made a roundhouse for our settlement. Making the roof was really tricky. We had

to re-think some of our ideas, but showed great resilience. We didn’t give up!

Members of each team used newplast to make models for the settlement. We thought

carefully about what to make to show adults what had

changed since the Stone Age. We made lots of crops,

animals and bowls. Why?

Making fences was very, very fiddly! Our fence makers were very patient and demonstrated lots of resilience. They went on to support other people; great team work!

Why wouldn’t we have made these things for a model of the

Stone Age?

Some of us represented the thatched roof by weaving wool around the wooden timbers of the roundhouse.It took a long time and we showed great perseverance.

We chose our own methods for making the roofs of the roundhouses.

After a quick demonstration, we made the

hill for our settlement all

alone.Our team work was excellent!

Julia and Nikolai started painting the base of the

settlement, but were soon joined by lots of

willing helpers.
