IRONY

“Irony is an insult conveyed in the form of a compliment”

Edwin P. Whipple

Verbal Irony

When someone says one thing but means the opposite

Example: “You look very nice today” Teacher to a student who has suddenly

sprouted a blue mohawk.

Situational Irony

Describes an occurrence that is not just surprising; it is the opposite of what we expected.

EXAMPLE: Alannis Morisette: He won the lottery but died the next day. You meet the man of your dreams and

then meet his beautiful wife

Dramatic Irony Is the kind of irony that occurs when

we know what is in store for a character but the character does not know.

Example:Romeo and Juliet We know that Juliet is not dead but
