Islam by countryFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Muslims constitute the world's secondlargest religious group. According to a2010 study and released January 2011,[1][2] Islam has 1.57 billion adherents, making up over 23% of the worldpopulation.[3][4][5] Most Muslims are oftwo denominations: Sunni (75–90%)[6]
or Shia (10–20%).[7] Ahmadis representabout 1% of the Muslim population.[8]
Islam is the dominant religion in theMiddle East, North Africa, the Horn ofAfrica, the Sahel,[1][9][10][11] and someparts of Asia.[12] Large communities ofMuslims are also found in China, the Balkans, India and Russia.[1][13] Other parts of the world host largeMuslim immigrant communities; in Western Europe, for instance, Islam is the second largest religion afterChristianity, where it represents 6% of the total population.[14]
According to the Pew Research Center in 2010 there were 50 Muslimmajority countries.[15][16] Around62% of the world's Muslims live in South and Southeast Asia, with over 1 billion adherents.[17] The largestMuslim population in a country is in Indonesia, a nation home to 12.7% of the world's Muslims, followedby Pakistan (11.0%), India (10.9%), and Bangladesh (9.2%).[1][18] About 20% of Muslims live in Arabcountries.[19] In the Middle East, the nonArab countries of Turkey and Iran are the largest Muslimmajoritycountries; in Africa, Egypt and Nigeria have the most populous Muslim communities.[1][18] The study foundmore Muslims in the United Kingdom than in Lebanon and more in China than in Syria.[1]

11. Encyclopædia Britannica. Britannica Book of the Year 2003. Encyclopædia Britannica, (2003) ISBN 9780852299562 p.306According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, as of mid2002, there were 376,453,000 Christians, 329,869,000Muslims and 98,734,000 people who practiced traditional religions in Africa. Ian S. Markham, (A WorldReligions Reader. Cambridge, MA: Blackwell Publishers, 1996.)(http://www.bellbookandcandlepublications.com/greenwoodsvillage/gor/islam.php) is cited by MorehouseUniversity as giving the mid1990s figure of 278,250,800 Muslims in Africa, but still as 40.8% of the totalpopulation. These numbers are estimates, and remain a matter of conjecture. See Amadu Jacky Kaba. The spreadof Christianity and Islam in Africa: a survey and analysis of the numbers and percentages of Christians, Muslimsand those who practice indigenous religions. The Western Journal of Black Studies, Vol 29, Number 2, June2005. Discusses the estimations of various almanacs and encyclopedium, placing Britannica's estimate as themost agreed figure. Notes the figure presented at the World Christian Encyclopedia, summarized here(http://www.afrikaworld.net/afrel/Statistics.htm), as being an outlier. On rates of growth, Islam and PentecostalChristianity are highest, see: The List: The World’s FastestGrowing Religions(http://www.foreignpolicy.com/story/cms.php?story_id=3835), Foreign Policy, May 2007.
