The House of War

Many scholars dispute that the Greater Jihad is personal struggle

Jihad

The House of War

Explicit commands in the Qur’an to wage war against unbelievers

O Prophet! Strive hard against the unbelievers and the Hypocrites, and be firm against them. Their abode is Hell, - an evil refuge indeed. (9:73, 66:9)

Jihad

The House of War

Explicit commands in the Qur’an to wage war against unbelievers

Therefore listen not to the Unbelievers, but strive against them with the utmost strenuousness. (25:52)

Jihad

The House of War

But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers. And if they cease, then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Fight them until there is no [more] persecution and [until] worship is [acknowledged to be] for Allah . But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors.(2:191)

Jihad

The House of War

Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors. And slay them wherever ye catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith. But if they cease, Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. (2:190-192)

Jihad

What about tolerance?

There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing. (2:256)

Jihad

The House of War

What about tolerance?

Surah 2:256 is from the period immediately after the relocation to Medina and is abrogated by later verses such as Surahs 9 and 10.

Jihad

The House of War

What about tolerance?

Fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers [Islamic prayers five times a day] and practice regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. (9:5)

Dhimmitude

The conquered could accept either conversion to Islam, the status or Dhimmi (protected), or death.

Dhimmitude Dhimmi – inferior status for Jews and Christians

(9:29)
