The Cup is in rememberance of Anne McGettigan who is the mother to Lisa Kerr who is wife to Coach of the club Brian. Anne helped Brian and Lisa get the club started back in November 1995. She travelled with the club to different competitions at home and abroad to show her support and will always be remembered within the club for her work. She might be gone but never forgotten.

Reason for doing TaeKwonDo? Keep fit and getting to see my son’s take part in competition’s is awesome.
If you could fix just one thing in your class what would it be?Better music on brians ipod
On a scale of 1 to 10, how good are you under pressure? 1 is Poor, 10 is Great : 7
On a scale of 1 to 10, how well do you recover from a mistake? 7
Accuracy is part of all sports, what requires the most accuracy in your sport? For me it’s getting that head shot off quick that requires most accuracy
The best athletes are said to be in the ZONE. Have you ever experienced that? Describe.2014 was a great year for me in taekwondo as all competitions entered I came away with gold in them all so I think I was in the zone in all my fights in 2014 and to top it off I got student of the year which I most proud of as there’s so many great name’s on the trophy who have won it previous years.
Christopher Mulligan Receives the Anne McGettigan Memorial Cup
fielD of PlAy:Taekwondo contests are fought on a court measuring 8 metres x 8 metres.
BASicS: Each contest is made up of three two-minute rounds.
Over their standard white uniform, known as a dobok, competitors wear coloured electronic body protectors. The competitor wearing blue is referred to as chung, while the competitor in red is hong.
The object of Taekwondo is to land kicks and punches on the opponent’s scoring zones; either the electronic body protector or the head. The athlete with the most points at the end of the three rounds is declared the winner. If scores are level the competition will go to a ‘golden point’ whereby the first player to score wins the contest.
ScoriNG:ONE POINT: Awarded for valid attack (kick or punch) to electronic body protector.TWO POINTS: Awarded for valid turning kick to electronic body protector. THREE POINTS: Awarded for valid kick to the
head. This is scored by judges situated in each corner. A foot must make contact with the head guard in order to score. FOUR POINTS: Awarded for valid turning kick to the head and again scored by the judges.
officiAlS:A referee stays in the combat area, while corner judges sit at each corner of the court. The judges award points for valid kicks and punches that are recorded electronically.
BreAkiNG the ruleS:Infringing the rules can see valuable points awarded to the opposition. Penalties range from Kyong-go (a warning penalty) for acts such as crossing the boundary line, hitting below the waist or using the knee to attack. Two Kyong-go warnings result in a point being awarded to the opponent.
More seriously, a Gam-Jeom (deduction penalty) is given for actions such as attacking a fallen opponent, or intentionally attacking the face. A Gam-Jeom results in a one-point deduction.
If an athlete receives four penalty deduction points, the contest is stopped and the opponent is declared the winner.

Servet Tazegül2012 Olympic GOLD MedalistCountry: TurkeyDate of birth: September 26, 1988Weight category: -68kg
A taekwondo superstar whose fame transcends the sport, especially in Turkey where there is an indoor sports arena named in his honour. Tazegul, who lives in Germany, has won every honour in the sport. Three-time European champion, including his victory in Manchester, Tazegul was world champion in 2011 and then defeated Mohammad Bagheri Motamed 6-5 to claim Olympic gold at London 2012. He also has an Olympic bronze in his collection from Beijing and 2013 finished third at the Mediterranean Games where gold went to Spain’s Daniel Barrera.
Servet Tazegül wins Turkey’s first Olympic gold in men’s Taekwondo. Tazegül, the world number one and Beijing bronze medallist, defeated Britain’s Martin Stamper to reach the final and was the class act of the -68kg category. Taking the gold medal at the London Games, beating Iran’s Mohammad Baghrei Motamed in the final by a score of 6-5.
His aggression and speed was too much for Motamed, often in attack mode, throwing combinations of spinning or jumping kicks. Motamed also lost to Tazegül in the final of last year’s world championships in South Korea.
Tazegul dedicated the gold medal to his mother, who died earlier this year.
“I lost my mother two months ago. I really wanted to get the gold for her,” he said. “But it was a hard time, I did not train much plus I had the injury.”
Rohullah Nikpai, who won Afghanistan’s first Olympic medal with a bronze in Beijing, picked up another bronze through the repechage, along with American Terrence Jennings.
“The Olympics are always special, I’m happy. I’ll bring this medal back home,” said Nikpai.
“I think that right now everyone in Afghanistan must be dancing.”
The Servet Tazegül Arena is a multi-purpose indoor arena located at Yenişehir district of Mersin, Turkey, named in honor of the Olympic, world and European Champion Taekwondo practitioner Servet Tazegül (born 1988). The construction of the building began on January 20, 2012 with the laying of foundation stone. The arena is one of the eleven new-built sports venues in Mersin to host the 2013 Mediterranean Games. With its seating capacity of 7,500, it is the country’s fourth biggest indoor arena. It is situated to the south of Mersin Tennis Complex.
