Mitsubishi Chemical makes some of best golf shafts because we make them from scratch. We not
only manufacture the golf shaft, but all of the critical raw materials that make up the golf shaft
including the monomer, acrylic fiber, carbon fiber, resin, and prepreg. Over the last 30-years, we have
developed more than a thousand different formulations of resin and made over a hundred types of
fiber for many performance-based applications, including golf shafts.
This vertical integration means we can make virtually any combination of resins and fibers required
to optimize a golf shaft’s design and performance. The majority of our competitors, on the other
hand, work with a relatively limited list of raw materials from a finite number of available suppliers.
Typically, they purchase stock prepreg, which can require designs to be adjusted to the limitations of
the available materials. Our ability to make any composition of resin or fiber and combine them into
our own prepreg sets us apart from our competition.
MonomersBasic raw materials consisting of simple molecular
structures (monomers) are combined to produce
Acrylonitrile (AN). AN is then polymerized to form
polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Mitsubishi Chemical uses the
highest-grade materials available to create AN and PAN.
PrecursorA solution of PAN is then spun into precursor. The process
of creating precursor heavily influences the quality and
consistency of the carbon fiber. It is a process in which
Mitsubishi Chemical has refined and perfected over the
past 60-years.
Carbon FiberPrecursor is oxidized and carbonized in ovens to produce
carbon fiber. Mitsubishi Chemical produces carbon fiber for
a variety of different applications and is one of the largest
manufacturers of carbon fiber in the world.
PrepregCarbon fibers are impregnated with resin to produce
ready-to-mold material in sheet or tow form. Mitsubishi
Chemical produces a variety of different types of prepreg
for many different applications (e.g. aerospace, sporting
goods, etc.).
ResinsMitsubishi Chemical has developed many different resin
systems that possess a variety of mechanical properties
(e.g. density, strength, toughness).
Over 30 Years ExperienceDifferent types of prepreg and exotic materials are then
combined to create a composite golf shaft. Mitsubishi
Chemical has over 30-years of experience in designing and
developing premium, performance-oriented golf shafts.
If you want it done right, you do it yourself.
A single strand of carbon fiber is a highly
complex thing. It can be used in countless
ways and fine-tuned to achieve specific
performance characteristics.
We think about carbon fiber a lot. There
are people at Mitsubishi Chemical, who
know more about carbon fiber than most
anybody else in the world. When you take
the best of these ideas and focus them
on a single goal — like making the most
advanced golf shafts in the world — you
get a lot of very satisfied golfers.
Most of our material technologies and
innovations are developed in-house
by Mitsubishi Chemical at our labs in
Toyohashi, Japan or within the Mitsubishi
Chemical Holdings Group. Together we
have created thousands of individual
formulations of the raw materials that go
into a composite golf shaft.
Our ability to “custom craft” raw materials
means we can create prepreg and resins
from scratch and achieve the exact
performance characteristics we want.
Driven by innovation.
Aluminum Vapor Deposited Fiber (Av) WeaveInside a vacuum-sealed chamber, the micro fiber is coated with aluminum
vapor. This AV fiber enhances stability, to help achieve the desired EI targets.
The AV weave is tighter and thinner than typical woven materials, which helps
prevent shaft ovaling.
Carbon/Kevlar® (Ck) WeaveA Carbon Fiber/DuPont™ Kevlar® (CK) woven material; featuring Mitsubishi
Chemical carbon fiber has been developed to increase the strength and stability
of our shaft in addition to providing superior feel and feedback throughout the
swing. DuPont™ Kevlar® is a trademark or registered trademark of E. I. du Pont
de Nemours & Company.
Dual-Core Titanium Nickel (Tini) WireTitanium Nickel (TiNi) Wire is a premium elastic wire that immediately springs
back to its original shape when stretched. By placing a double layer of TiNi
Wire (Dual-Core TiNi) in the tip-section of a shaft we can further increase the
strength and stability at impact and deliver tighter shot dispersion.
MR70Specifically designed and developed by Mitsubishi Chemical for high-
performance applications, MR70 is an innovative new carbon fiber material
that is 20% stronger and has 10% the modulus than conventional materials.
Hybrid Prepeg With BoronMitsubishi Chemical has created hybrid prepreg materials for decades.
Our latest creation combines MR70 with Boron fibers to make one of our
strongest, most exotic materials yet. Boron fiber is equivalent in stiffness to
high modulus carbon fiber with superior compression strength. It is used to
structurally reinforce specific areas of the shaft.
Braided TechnologyThe “braiding” technology using Tow Prepreg is incredibly resistant to twisting
and ovaling and creates a shaft with no spine, so the shaft performs more
consistently than a shaft made with traditional sheet prepreg.
Straight Flight Weighting (SFW)The Straight Flight Weighting (SFW) system improves ball flight. As a shaft
gets lighter, it becomes more difficult for the golfer to square the clubface or
turn the club over through impact, especially a driver. Thus, SFW is designed
to help the golfer turn the club over easier through impact, which in turn
straightens a slight fade or promotes a slight draw. A short section of tungsten
weighted prepreg is precisely placed under the lower end of the shaft’s grip area
to produce the effect.
Tungsten Infused PrepregA major innovation from our labs in Toyohashi, Japan is our prepreg infused
with Tungsten Powder, a very heavy and dense powder. Placing tungsten-
infused resin sheets throughout the shaft can affect balance point and overall
shaft performane.
Let’s face it, there’s a lot of bragging that goes on in the golf business. And while some shaft companies
go on and on about how often their shafts are used on the professional tours, we’ve always believed one
measurement counts more than any other: Are players winning with it? Isn’t that the whole point? That’s
what Mitsubishi Chemical shafts do better than any other shaft: They help players win. Which is how the
best players in the world become the best players in the world.
LET US COUNT THE WAYS.

OT™ SeriesNew Ideas. New Performance.
The OT™ Series doesn’t use traditional sheets of prepreg, but instead uses a new material for the golf shaft industry
called Tow Prepreg. Tow Prepreg uses carbon fibers that are arranged in super-strong “bundles” (the way a steel cable
is made). These bundles are impregnated with resin to create the Tow Prepreg, and then woven together like a braid.
The “braiding” technology using Tow Prepreg is incredibly resistant to twisting and ovaling and creates a shaft with
no spine, so the shaft performs more consistently than a shaft made with traditional sheet prepreg. The braiding also
minimizes vibration, to provide the better feedback that’s so important for iron play.
OT™ Tour HybridMid Launch and Mid/Low Spin
The OT™ Hybrid shaft benefits from the same Braided
Technology found in the OT™ Irons. It is incredibly resistant
to twisting and ovaling and creates a shaft with no spine,
so the shaft performs more consistently than a shaft made
with traditional sheet prepreg.
