Student- Library Policies and Procedures
Library Etiquette: All district rules in the Student Code of Conduct
Handbook will be adhered to in the library. Students will enter and exit
through the front entrance of the library. Students must be in dress code.
Please be respectful of others, work and talk quietly. No food or drink is
allowed in the library, unless advised. Take care of all library materials,
equipment, and decor. Cell phones are not allowed when with a
scheduled class.
Check out Policies: Two library books may be checked out at one time
for a two week period. The J. W. Nixon Library does not charge fines for
overdue books. Return book/s in the same condition as they were prior
to checkout. Lost books are the cost replacement of the book.
DO NOT check out books for anyone other than yourself.
Student IDs: Students are issued an ID during their freshman year at no
cost. If the student loses the ID, a replacement cost is required.
Freshman IDs will be given out on a scheduled basis. IDs can be taken
before the first class bell rings in the morning, during lunch, and after
school.
Teachers and Staff- Library Policies and Procedures
Student Passes: During class time, students sent to the library must have the
designated library pass (goldenrod), and the teacher must fill in the appropriate
information. Teachers need to send the student/s with an assignment to complete,
and the student should be clear of his or her purpose for visiting the library. Five
students per class are allowed in the library per block and will be sent back if not
following library or school policy.
Class Visits and Scheduling: Teachers can reserve the library on a first come, first
serve basis. Rosters with IDs are needed prior to a class visit for documentation
purposes. We can accommodate more than one class at a time, but as a courtesy,
ask the teacher who signed up first. Teachers are required to remain with his or her
class at all times. Scheduling is subject to change.
Book Reservation and Check out: We encourage teachers to check out library
materials. Responsibility for items checked out is placed on the person who checks
them out and if lost must be paid. All items are to be returned in good condition.
Students scheduled to remain in the library: Students sent to the library by
administration or the nurse are to remain in the library at all times and will be
monitored by the library staff. Students are required to complete his or her class
assignments in a timely manner as designated by the teacher. Teachers are
responsible for providing daily assignments.
Technology in the Library
Computers: Computers in the library are designated for student and
school use. Classes may be scheduled to use the computer area on a first
come, first serve bases. This is subject to change as needed.
Printing: Printers are to be used for educational purposes only. Students
are allowed to print school related documents following all district
policies.

All videos to be viewed must be property of the school district/campus.
Videos viewed in classroom or library must be part of instruction and documented in lesson plans.
All videos, or excerpts, must not exceed 20 minutes.
SECTION 110 OF THE COPYRIGHT ACT FOR CLASSROOMS
“Section 110 of the Act exempts certain performances and displays of copyrighted works if specific conditions are met. The
most common exemption is for performances and displays of a nondramatic literary or musical work in the regular course
of instruction in a nonprofit educational institution. Even within a school or college, further requirements must be met.
The performance must take place in broadly defined classroom; libraries meet the definition if instruction routinely takes
place in the library, and it does in most schools and universities. Teachers and students must be present in the same place,
and the performance must be a part of the instruction. In other words, it must not be a performance purely for
entertainment purposes. Another important requirement is that the copy that is performed must be a lawfully obtained
copy. In fact, the exemption is lost if the librarian knew or should have known, that the copy was not lawfully obtained.
When these requirements are met, students and teacher may sing a copyrighted song, read a copyrighted poem or perform
a copyrighted play. Additionally, they may view the performance of a copyrighted motion picture or audiovisual work.
Although, many people believed that nonprofit libraries were nonprofit educational institutions, amendments since 1984
make it clear that they are not. Libraries in nonprofit educational institutions are covered by the exemption if the above
mentioned conditions are met. Public libraries are not.”
