Serving in January 12
From the Desk of
Pastor Ann Kelly First, a note of gratitude: *Thank you to everyone who had a part in making our Advent and Christmas activities so faithful and meaningful! *Thank you to everyone who shared the joy of Christmas with me through your cards, goodies, and especially the generous gift from the congregation. Serving with you is a joy! As I’m writing this on Dec. 31, New Year’s Eve, my thoughts are inevitably drawn to reflecting on the year behind us and the year ahead of us. I moved to Sanford in January 2018, with great excitement at the opportunity to serve as Trinity’s pastor. My first official day with you was February 1 – so it’s been almost a year! It turned out to be a very difficult year for my family, with my father’s illness and the deaths of my brother, my other brother’s wife, and that brother’s oldest daughter. I also had some health issues of my own. At the same time, many of you are grieving the loss of loved ones, and many of you are dealing with serious health concerns for yourselves and your family members. Plus, we’ve weathered a hurricane or two. God has given us the opportunity to walk together, to support one another in faith, and to share our sorrows and our joys. And we do have joys! The joyful music of Christmas worship is still ringing in my ears. We share the joys of worship, the joys of fellowship, the joys of growing to-gether in faith, and the joy of welcoming newcomers to Trinity. I am enjoying getting to know you, the people of Trinity. These joys continue to beckon as we look ahead to 2019 and our opportunities for worship, fellowship, faith formation, and service. God continues to call us into the future that is already held in God’s hands. As the prophet reminds us in the 43rd chapter of Isaiah, while God does not tell us that we won’t have to go through difficult times, God does promise to be with us through everything. We have received this promise in Jesus, whose birth we celebrate at Christmas, and whose life and ministry teach us about the reign of God. Through the cross of Christ, we know that God meets us at the cross – at the painful and difficult times of our lives. Through the cross of Christ, we have love that is more powerful than fear, and we have hope that is more powerful than death. Through Christ, we have the church, the body of Christ where we support one another in fulfilling God’s mission. We walk together into the future with hopeful expectation for what God will do with us and through us in 2019.

The annual meeting of the congrega-tion is scheduled for Sunday, January 20. We’ll gather for lunch after wor-ship, enjoy some fellowship, and hear reports about Trinity’s ministries over the past year. You are invited to attend!
Bible Study on the Gospel of Luke begins
on January 13 at 9:00 a.m. in the fellowship
hall. During this church year most of our
Sunday Gospel readings come from the
Gospel of Luke. Spending some time study-
ing the Gospel as a whole makes the Sunday
readings much more meaningful and en-
lightening. You are welcome to join us as we
read through Luke and discuss Luke’s
themes and messages.
Trinity Women of the ELCA (WELCA) will meet on January 12 at 9:30 in the Fellowship Hall. The WELCA Spring Retreat is March 8-10 at Kure Beach. Our very own Carolyn Miller and Heidi Gibson will be presenting the program. This is a statewide retreat and spaces fill up VERY quickly. Please see Heidi for a registration form, or check on ncwelca.org

From the desk of the President
A New Year is upon us, and we should look forward to it with hope and faithfulness. We all hope for the best, but we can stack the odds at Trinity by volun-teering for the many things needed to make our church a welcoming house of worship. We all put our faith in God, and we can share God’s greatness with others we meet. Please thank Faye Cress, Larry Hrvatin and Christine Keat for their service on the congregation council for the past three years. We want to welcome our new council members Renate Gibson, Glen Carrington, Elvira Rivera, and Wendy Goldston. Next year’s of-ficers are President Sheri Trudeau, Vice-President Craig Peterson, and Secretary Lori Krombos. I would to thank everyone for their help and support you gave me this year as council president, and I know this will continue with the new President and Council. I will close with a prayer I found at www.prayerscapes.com: Prayer for a New Beginning Lord, At the beginning of this new day, I offer you my life. Come take my voice, may the words I speak be filled with encouragement and goodness. Come take my hands, may the work they create be generous and giving. Come take my feet, may the journeys I walk be led by your Spirit within. Come take my life Lord, for I love your goodness, your kindness and your leading. Amen.
Trinity member Louann Bockman will be having knee surgery on January 11, 2019, at 7:30 AM at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. After surgery, she will be moving to Liberty Rehabilitation Center in Sanford. She is unsure of how long she will be there but would love to have visi-tors. Please keep her in your prayers in the coming days and after her surgery.
WITH SYMPATHY
With sadness for her family's loss, and for her friends' loss, yet with resurrection hope, we share that Mrs. Bea Van Hoesen passed away on Dec. 23, 2018, in Tennes-see, after a period of time in hospice care. Her son intends to hold a memorial ser-vice for her at Trinity in late March or early April, after the threat of winter weather that impacts travel over the mountains has passed. Her ashes will be interred in the columbarium at Trinity.
WITH JOY We share our congratulations to Jo Lynn Welda and David Dorrough, who were married at Trinity in a small ceremony on Dec. 29, 2018. May God continue to rich-ly bless their lives together!

The Crew was delighted to welcome a new member this month. We are also looking forward to a Plan-ning Retreat at Camp Agape next month. In December, crew members enjoyed fellowship at a Christmas party and practiced more cooking techniques. In preparation for their third Last Day Hike, crew president Elizabeth Lessick and crew advisor,= Tama-ra Lewis were interviewed by Wayne Staton on the local cable program Live at Nine. Several crew members also spent an afternoon with Ranger Steve Godfrey at San-Lee Park finding out about the history of the park and how it came to be. In addition, a former crew member and now park employee took the group around on a soggy afternoon and showed them where they think surface gold mining took place in the early twentieth century. All this was to be prepared to welcome fellow Scouts and the general public to this year’s hike at 10:00 a.m. on December 31 at San Lee Park. Here is a list of the crew’s activities throughout the year:

January 6-Epiphany of Our Lord
January 13-Baptism of Our Lord
January 20-2nd Sunday after Epiphany
January 27-3rd Sunday after Epiphany
Isaiah 60:1-6 Psalm 72:1-7, 10-14 Ephesians 3:1-12 Matthew 2:1-12
Epiphany means “manifestation.” On this day we celebrate the revelation
of Christ to the Gentiles—that is, to all nations. Some Christian traditions
celebrate three great epiphanies on this day: the magi’s adoration of the
Christ child, Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River, and his first miracle, in
which he changes water into wine. The word and sacraments are for us the
great epiphany of God’s grace and mercy. We go forth to witness to the
light that shines brightly in our midst.
Isaiah 43:1-7 Psalm 29 Acts 8:14-17 Luke 3:15-17, 21-22
The Baptism of Our Lord cannot help but recall our own and all baptismal
blessings. We recall and celebrate our adoption as daughters and sons, the
gift of the Holy Spirit, and the promised company of almighty God when
we “pass through the waters . . . the rivers . . . fire.” On this day the heav-
ens open again for this assembly, and we receive the gift of the beloved
Son of God in bread and wine.
Isaiah 62:1-5 Psalm 36:5-10 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 John 2:1-11
The Sundays after Epiphany continue to celebrate the revelation of the glo-
ry of God to us as it was made known to the magi and to those on Jordan’s
banks at the baptism of Jesus—today using wedding imagery. Our God
rejoices over God’s people “as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride.” By
the power of the Spirit there are gifts galore for everyone. In Christ Jesus
the best wine is saved for last. Taste and see.
Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10 Psalm 19 1 Corinthians 12:12-31a Luke 4:14-21
The glory of the Lord is revealed in the reading of scripture. People stand
at attention. People weep. People prostrate themselves in prayer. The unity
of the church is another reflection of the glory of God. Most gloriously, the
promises of God are fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ. Gather round.
Listen up. Glimpse the glory of God.

Dear Trinity Folks, There was so very much to be thankful for in December—if I inadvertently leave something out, please know that it is only because there were “blessings without number.”
Lori Krombos who instigated the cookie exchange and who made sure there was plenty to drink and fellowship with on the night of the Sanford Christmas parade. All the cookie bakers who supplied treats for the folks who stopped in and all the folks from the congregation who came to be a welcom-ing presence. Faye Cress and Pastor Ann getting the church decorated and prepped for the Hanging of the Greens service. All the singers at our Advent services, especially Rachel Lloyd with the processional prayer. Kayla Brockhoff adding her wonderful flute to our Advent and Christmas worship services. The cooks who provided meals for hungry worshipers on Wednesday nights. The saintly folks who cleaned up the meals. All the carolers who came out on a rainy afternoon and sang with great joy. The congregation members who opened their homes and their hearts to the message the musicians brought. Carrie Doberstein and all the “daughter elves” who prepared a delicious reception for the carolers. Laurie Phillips in the office who made sure our bulletins were prepared so the congregation could focus on worshiping. All the members of the altar guild who prepared the table that blesses us all. Phillip Lloyd and all who prepared our space for services. The acolytes who literally bring light into our gatherings. The faithful ushers who helped make sure all the worshipers had what they needed and welcomed our newcomers. The bakers and food preparers who made sure there were plenty of treats to encourage people to stay for fellowship time after the services. And the saints who cleaned up, who were often the same people. Pastor Ann for her leadership and dedication, no matter how many curve balls we threw her way. And for her words of wisdom. The inspired musicians in the choir and the soloists and instrumental-ists who all added so much to our worship. Todd Lewis who cheerfully spent hours making our choir music more readable. Sheri Trudeau and Betsey Walters who taught our youngest worshipers. Sam Sloan who sang and read for her first Nine Lessons and Carols service and the seasoned voices who read a familiar story with new energy and insight. Kim Whitney who encouraged the continued cele-bration of Christmas with her expressive violin playing. Ramon Ortiz, Craig Peterson, Joe Dilworth, Todd Lewis, and all who helped keep our building maintained and dry. Brian Carlyle and his crew who went above and beyond to have our worship space in top shape for celebrating. Everyone who sang heartily at any time during the season. All who came to be with the communi-ty even when struggling with personal challenges. All who brought visitors to experience the word and sacrament. May we all go in peace and continue to serve our Lord! With a truly thankful heart, Tamara Lewis
