As temperatures plummet below – 40 C, Town of Norman Wells, Canada, has been evacuating several buildings due to the town’s natural gas service not working currently. A children’s daycare center is being used to relocate a senior citizen’s home. Other residents are also moving to the town’s school to keep warm. Norman Wells has been able to use a back up supply of energy until this problem is dealt with.(http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/story/2013/01/28/north-norman-wells-natural-gas-evacuation.html)

SaintXavier’scommutersareoften an overlooked bunch. Yet,theyaretheschool’ssilentmajority, its underappreciated lifeblood. Ifthey disappeared, so would theuniversity. Ifyouarethekindofpersonthatgoestothemoviesalot(likeme), thenyouknow that it isnostrange occurrence to seemaybetwoor three trailers that containthewords:“Basedonatruestory”. For somepeople thismeansthat the film being advertisedis an almost documentary stylepresentationofthetruth. While I amnotdiscountingthe amount of people who arewell aware of the boundary thatliesbetweeninterpretationofthetruth and the truth itself, I havecomeacrossquiteafewpeoplethatseem tonotbe able tomake thedistinction. I had this experience lastNovemberwhenthefilm“Lincoln”cameintotheaters.Ihadnumerousdiscussionswithpeoplewhohadseenthefilmandquiteafewpeopleremarked, “You actually thinkthatDanielDay-LewisisAbrahamLincoln.Helooksandsoundslikehim!” Wait…huh? He looks andSOUNDSlikehim?Iwould lovetoknowhowthatparticularfriendknowswhatthe16thPresidentoftheUnited States sounded like, considering the fact thatLincolnlived in the age before recordedsound. I amwell aware thatDanielDay-Lewisheavilyinvestigatedthemannerisms andmechanics ofPresidentLincoln in preparationforwhatcouldbehisthirdOscar-

Butisn’tabitpresumptuoustosaythatDay-Lewisnailedexactlywhat Lincoln sounded like? Itis a great performance, which isprobablywhysomanyareeagertosay thatDay-Lewis nails Lincolnperfectly, despite the fact thatweknownothingofthephysicalandvocal characteristics of good ol’HonestAbe. But while Day-Lewis hadmuchhistoricalcontexttogooninordertoprepareforhisrole,Oscarwinning screenwriterMarkBoal(“TheHurtLocker”)hadverylittlehistorical record to go onwhilecrafting his screenplay for “ZeroDarkThirty” – a gritty depictionoftheeventsinbetweenthe9/11terroristattacksandtheraidonacompoundinPakistanthatwouldleadtotheeventualdeathofOsamabinLaden. There are scenes in “ZeroDarkThirty”thatringwithtruth–especiallythewonderfully/brutallyexecuted films featuring torture– but there is somuch that wedon’t know about the binLadenmanhunt and raid carried outby the stillmostly nameless andfacelessSealTeamSix.
I wonder still how manypeoplewilltakethewordswrittenbyBoaltobegospeltruth.Iamnotdiscountingthehistoricalcontextthatfilmscangivetheiraudiences. Sometimeswhenafilmtriestorecordhistoryitendsuplosingsightoftheimportantaspectofthespiritoftheeventsitisrecording. Such is the case ofMichaelMann’s“Ali”–afilmthattriestotake its audience into every backroomconversationthatthefamedboxerMuhammadAlihadduringhisprime. The film becomes a stalerecitationofeventsasopposedtoa coherent narrative. While I’msureMichaelMann can claim alot of the things that happen inthe film “Ali”mirror that of thelife of the real Ali, he cannotboast a successful film (with thenotable exceptionof thebrilliantperformance ofWill Smith inthetitularroleandJonVoightas
HowardCosell). Again, thereinlaysthetrickydistinctionofentertainmentfromaccurate information. Perhapsthat’swhysomany films thatarebasedon truestories leaveeventsout or overly dramatize them;sometimes history only makesperfectsensewithanarrativearchrunning through things to jointhemtogether. (One exception that I canthinkofisRonHoward’sbrilliantlyexecuted“Apollo13”;duringthatfilm’s production Jim Lovell’sinsightandconsultingwasusedingreatfrequency.) Yet, there are people whohaveahardtimeseparatingsheerentertainment from adelivery ofinformation. AnotherfriendofmineuponviewingQuentinTarantino’sWorldWar II pulp-fest “InglouriousBasterds” was livid and angry, insistingthatthethingsTarantino
put on screen never actuallyhappened. Iwillnotspoiltheendingofthefilmforthoseofyouhavenotseen thepicture – shameon youthathaven’t–butthefilm’sclimaxisobviouslyhistoricallyinaccurateandthat’sthepoint. Tarantino’s pulp fest isobviously an exception. Fewfilmmakers would dare to bendhistoryinsuchablatant, yetboldway in the same vein asQuentinTarantino. Films canbe a great tool toshowtheattitudesandspiritofahistoricalevent, butseldomshouldtheybebelievedasabsolutetruths.Ijusthopeonedaymykids(shouldthat day ever come) don’t walkup tome and tellme how theylearnedAbrahamLincoln endedthe establishment of slaver, wontheCivilWar,restoredtheUniontoitsfullestANDkilledvampires.
