    ************* USGF - Despite the r a t h e r poor performance o f the American r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s i n the Men's I n t e r z o n a l Tournaments and the f a i l u r e o f any Americans t o q u a l i f y f o r the p l a y o f f s , there was one very promising r e s u l t . Diane Savereide of Santa Monica, GA placed f i f t h a t the Women's I n t e r z o n a l i n A l i c a n t e , Spain w i t h a score of 11-6, which i s by f a r the best r e -s u l t by an American woman i n many years. As a mat t e r of f a c t , Diane was the s t a r of the second h a l f o f the tournament as she scored seven p o i n t s i n her l a s t e i g h t games - i n the process d e f e a t i n g three Soviet p a r t i c i p a n t s who f i n i s h e d 1 s t , 3rd and 4 t h .
