JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2019
MESSAGE FROM THE ADMIN TEAM
The school year is rolling along, and as we return from winter break, there
are only two weeks of Semester One classes remaining before final assessments.
Reports were mailed home on December 12th for any students who may need academic intervention. Please review your child's interim report with your child and contact the teacher directly for any further information. We are once again offering the I Plan homework room in room 158 with Mr. Pereira. Students can access this support if they need help in their courses. It is important for students to put in their best effort as we head towards the final stretch of the Semester One classes and put in the time to review for final exams.
Students in the DP Todd Music Program shone brightly in their band concerts hosted by Mrs. Klein. The Fall Concert celebration was an amazing evening of group and individual performances. Band students continue to provide community outreach by bringing their talents to various groups throughout Prince George. The Festival of Trees, Civic Light Up Ceremony, and Rotary Christmas Luncheon have all enjoyed the music of our DP Todd musicians.
December was a month that showcased our school spirit with theme days, a lively and well- attended Winter Formal hosted by the Leadership Class, and a school-wide pancake breakfast put on by the staff for all of the students. Happy New Year!

SCHOOL PARKING LOT & STUDENT DROP OFF LANE Parents and students are asked to not stop in the middle of the staff parking lot to drop off students. Please use the drop off lane. Also a reminder that the drop off lane is one way traffic and all traffic through the drop off lane should proceed slowly as there are children and staff walking across the lane at all times of the day. Thank you for your cooperation with this safety concern.

D.P. TODD AWARDS EVENING
The DP Todd Awards Evening is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, June 12th at
7:00 pm in the gymnasium. Save the date on your calendar.
SEMESTER ONE ASSESSMENTS
A reminder to students and parents that the Semester One Assessment period is January 21 – 25, 2019 for School Assessments and Provincial Assessments (Provincial Assessment schedule on page 4 of this newsletter). The school assessment schedule will be posted in the school and on the DP Todd website in January. If parents or students have any questions regarding the assessments, they can contact Mrs. Marren at the school office – 250-562-9525.
COUNSELLORS’ CORNER
School District #57 Awards Program: The District Awards On-Line at the District’s website is available to all Grade 12
students. Ms. Nicholson will have the directions regarding how to apply after the Winter Break. The online application will be open to students starting January 16, 2019 and will close on February 27, 2019 at 12am. The counsellors will post information on the Counselling Bulletin Board outside the counselling area about this and other essential post-secondary information such as how to release student transcripts to the post-secondary institutes. The DP Todd website also has information about PSI selection, which is how students release their transcripts. This is an essential process because official transcripts are required for admission to post-secondary. If students have questions, they should ask their counsellor.
Early Admission and Applications to post-secondary institutions: Grade 12's intending to go to university or college next school year should be checking with the post-secondary institutes regarding application deadlines. Early admission is often necessary for students to be eligible for entrance awards offered by the institute of their choice.
Grade 12’s should check the bulletin board outside the counselling area regularly for important messages regarding scholarships, post-secondary information, and meetings. EducationPlannerBC.ca is an invaluable website for those
interested in everything regarding post-secondary education.
LEADERSHIP NEWS
Yearbook Update: Nearly 300 of our 400 yearbooks are already pre-sold! If you have not paid for a yearbook yet,
you can do so at the office until Spring Break. If you do not purchase the yearbook by then, you will not be able to get one for the 2018/19 school year. Remember: you can pay by cash or cheque at the school office . . . and soon even pay online with a link on the school website. Keep checking the school website for more details. Course selection for Leadership: Students will begin selecting their courses in February and it should be noted that
Leadership class occurs outside of the regular timetable (at lunch twice a week). This allows students to take another course in the regular timetable - earning even more grad credits! Also, Leadership level 1 is now open to Grade 10 students as well as 11/12s.

BAND NEWS
Our Fall Band Concert on November 19th was a wonderful night of music celebrating the ever growing talents of our DP Todd musicians. Thank you to all the families and friends who show such warm support throughout the year. It has been a busy musical season as we also sent out our Brass Ensemble to the SPCA Annual Fundraiser, the Civic Light Up Ceremony, and the Rotary Christmas Luncheon. Also, our Grade 10 Concert Band performed at the Festival of Trees. Thanks for making the season musical for our community! But that's not all - coming up in January is our Grade 8 Advanced Band performing at the Prince George Chateau on January 18th, and our Winter Celebration performances by our Concert Bands on January 20th. Currently our Jazz Bands are working on our 2019 Jazz Extravaganza "Elvis Rocks the House" - yes! You guessed it! Elvis will be joining us on March 14th at Vanier Hall for our Annual DP Todd Jazz Extravaganza, singing up a storm accompanied by our Jazz Bands. Our New Grade 8 Year-Long Band will be starting up in February. Listen for announcements and check your emails for more information about this. If you have a connection with our elementary feeder schools, and know of some grade 7 students who would like to join us, please forward my email to them and they can contact me. Many of our students have been busy raising funds for their band accounts. Don't forget our on-going fundraiser with Save-On Foods gift cards. Buy a gift card from Customer Service at any of PG's 4 Save-on stores, let them know it's for the DP Todd BAND and then 4% will be sent to our band program. Bring Mrs. Klein your gift card receipt and she will credit your band account. Thanks to everyone for their tireless work at the Craft Fair this year. Special shout out to our coordinator Kim Meier. CALIFORNIA BAND ADVENTURE: Please note: If you want to use your band account money to pay for your trip, transfer requests must be received to Mrs. Klein in writing. If you do not request a transfer, the money in your account will be issued on a cheque for food/spending money prior to the trip. The second last trip payment was made November 30th. Only one payment is left of $450 and that is due January 31st.
UPCOMING DATES to REMEMBER
• Jan 20th - Winter Celebration of Music
• Mar 14th - Jazz Extravaganza featuring guest soloist "Elvis Impersonator" Steve Elliot

Student Transfer Process for September 2019
Once again it is that time of year for the District Online Transfer Application Process to take place. School District 57 students
who wish to transfer schools or who wish to attend schools outside of their catchment area for next year are required to apply
through the district’s transfer process. If you have a child going into Grade 8, but live outside of D.P. Todd’s catchment area, you
will be required to apply to have your child attend D.P. Todd in September 2019. Children with siblings attending D.P. Todd will
be given priority on the transfer application list.
The student transfer process for September 2019 will start the beginning of February 2019 and conclude the beginning of March
2019. All transfer applications must be made using the online transfer application form available at www.sd57.bc.ca. An
application may be made from any computer with Internet access or the general office of any district school. Please see the School
District 57 website for application details.
Note: Students attending Heritage, Foothills and Quinson Elementary Schools who do not live in the D.P. Todd catchment
area do not need to apply online. The student will automatically be registered into D.P. Todd Secondary School.
SCHOOL BUSES – WINTER WEATHER
1. Students shall not be expected to wait for a school bus more than fifteen minutes past the scheduled pickup time. If the bus has not arrived by that time, students should return to their homes or another prearranged place of shelter.
2. Parents are encouraged to arrange for someone to accompany small children to and from bus stops during extremely cold weather. Kindergarten students must be accompanied to and from their stop by a designated adult at ALL TIMES.
3. Parents are urged to develop emergency procedures with their children should they become stranded in cold weather. Please ensure that children have access to locked homes or other designated safe locations in case of a bus delay or other emergency.
4. Student baggage on school buses per Motor Vehicle Regulations 26/58, 35.14 (1) (c) (d) and (e): Equipment such as skis, poles, toboggans, crazy carpets, sleds, skateboards, etc., are not allowed on regular school buses. If a school program requires this type of equipment, other arrangements must be made to bring it to school. Skates must have skate guards or be carried in a gear bag. If an item including band instruments and equipment bags cannot be held on a student's lap, it cannot be brought on the bus.
5. Students are reminded to keep a safe distance away from all moving vehicles and not to "hitch bumper rides" on buses or any other vehicles.
6. Snow plows: The Ministry of Transportation and Highways warns students of the danger of playing near moving snow plows, particularly when the plows are throwing snow. The snow is thrown a considerable distance with great force and contains gravel and other particles that could inflict serious injury.
