At least it was for me when my husband and I moved to Tokyo in 1994. At first we were inhibited by the language barrier, indecipherable signs and menus, plus our general lack of Japanese culture. But soon we realized that our forays out were always an adventure. We received some food we didn’t know we ordered and ate some things

we never thought we would eat—but usually even the consequences of our mistakes were delicious.
In time, as we made Japanese friends we were introduced to unique experiences and incredibly delicious food. This sketchbook is a reflection of those many meals shared . I hope it will help people better appreciate Japanese cuisine, whether they are dining in Tokyo’s Ginza or a local Japanese restaurant anywhere in the world.
