JAPANESE GAME RATINGS.

CERO (Computer Entertainment Rating Organization), Japans answer to ESRB.

1st March 2006, Revamped Japanese entertainment rating.

Games are now rated with a letter. A being the lowest, rated for all, and Z being the highest, rated for Adults only.

Games are rated very differently in Japan compared to the rest of the world eg – Infamous have been given a Z rating, even though it received a T rating (13+) from the ESRB or 16 from PEGIAnd on the other end of the scale – Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel rated B by the CERO, which would technically give them E10+ or T (13+) ratings in North America. However, they were all rated M (17+ - CERO D rating) by the ESRB, a difference of 2-3 grades

Tanaka sees the future of gaming as one of extreme convergence.

“With Windows 8, the line between PCs and mobile has become blurry,” said Tanaka. “This trend will continue… and the traditional PC will disappear. Smartphones and PCs will converge to form a new platform.”

After that, game consoles will blend into the mix and everything you currently do across three devices will all be done on a single console/PC/smartphone hybrid, he said.

Future of gaming in Japan

Toshihiro Nagoshi, Sega

Nagoshi remarked that the Japanese console game market continues to grow bad, and the international market has also started to show slight signs of a drop. The current game market is facing a tough predicament. To combat this, it's up to game designers to improve their analysis skills so that they can analyse problem areas and come up with a solution.
