Consider some of these questions relating to journal information…….
• Which journal titles are available to publish in in my field of research?
• How do I find a metric to determine which journal is important in my field of research?
• Which journal titles are publishing the ‘hottest’ papers within a discipline?
• Where and how do I find a journal impact factor and journal rankings?
• How do I compare various journal metrics within a specific field?
3
The main databases with multi-disciplinary coverage that can be used to track journal metrics:
• Journal Citation Reports – Incites (Thomson Reuters)
• Scopus Journal Metrics (Elsevier)
Find ‘Journal Citation Reports (JCR) Incites’http://www.lib.uct.ac.za
From ‘Search & Find’ on the library page, choose ‘Databases A-Z’
5
From the A-Z list choose ‘J’ and thenchoose ‘Journal Citation Reports – Incites’

Journal Citation Reports (JCR) Incites
The Source Data Table shows the number of citable items in the JCR year. Citable items are further divided into articles (that is, research articles) and reviews.
Journal metrics are provided in a table. The Metric Trends graph will appear beneath the Key Indicators table when you click Graph for any of the indicators.
12
A graph representation of the journal impact factor (JIF) over a number of years shows the JIF trend.

Journal Metric Examples:Eigenfactor Score – measures the prestige of a journal in a subject field.Article influence – anything above 1 carries more influence than the average.Immediacy index – measures how quickly an article gets cited.

Scopus Journal Metrics
Scimago Journal Ranking• Measures the prestige of the journal by using ranking analytics• Subject field, quality and reputation has a direct effect on the value of a citation (not all citations
are equal)• It is normalized across disciplines• Does not allow self-citation within journals – manipulating the metric
Impact Per Paper (IPP)• Similar to the journal impact factor, but measured over 3 years, which is considered an optimal
time period to accurately measure citations• Not normalized for subject field and gives raw indication of citations
Source Normalized Impact Per Paper (SNIP)• Measures contextual citation impact by weighting citations based on the subject field• Allows for interdisciplinary comparison• Has a value of 1 for any given subject area.
