Riet l ives with her husband, Jaap, near the soccer stadium in the city of
Rotterdam, Holland. Built in the 1940’s to house the Rotterdam citizens
whom the WWII bombings had made homeless, the area is l ike a small
vil lage and Riet always wanted to live here. In fact, her sister l ived here
and it was through her that the couple got word about some people who
would prefer an apartment instead. They ended up taking over the home
and have lived here for over 40 years now.
When you visit the couple’s home, it ’s l ike stepping into a fairytale world
of authentic and completely unique treasures. Unlike most others, Riet
and Jaap have chosen to paint their house in a very dark color palette.
The couple wants their home to reflect originality and you won’t find any
standard solutions here. Through the years, the couple has renovated
the house themselves. Everyone’s personal taste changes over time, of
course, but their preference for originality has stuck. The living room
walls are painted a dark gray, almost black color. The dark colors create
an atmosphere of intensity and drama. To prevent the overall look from
feeling dark and heavy, the ceilings are light-colored and all doors have
been removed. The living room ceiling was in very bad shape when the
couple moved in so they chose to remove the old ceiling and install boards
in-between the original beams instead.
