Jimmy Choo: co-founder

Jimmy Choo was born in Malaysia in 1961. He was born into a family of shoe makers and constructed his first shoe at age 11.

Choo graduated from the London college of fashion in 1983 and opened his first shop in London. He was recognized in a spread in vogue magazine in 1988.

Tamara mellon approached jimmy Choo in 1996 and they opened the first stand alone boutique in London. Jimmy Choo ltd opened two boutiques in the us in 1998 and 1999.

In 2001 jimmy Choo sold 50% of his stocks for 10 million dollars. He now focuses on his jimmy Choo couture line and plans to open a design institute in Malaysia.

For the Jimmy Choo corporation a concept of an orchid mantis was chosen. The orchid mantis is an Malaysian insect. It’s preferred environment is among the petals of the orchid flower which conceals its similarly colored body and allows the mantis to hunt it’s pray and stay hidden from it’s predators.

The concept closely relates to Jimmy Choo by sharing the same native soil of Malaysia. furthermore, the design elements of jimmy choo’s products are connected to the mantis by the beauty, brilliance and the bold colors of both.

The orchid mantis is striking in color and form. It’s beauty might suggest a calm, docile creature but the opposite is true. The mantis is a fierce, aggressive creature who will attack even the largest of challenger.

The fashion industry demonstrates this same aggressiveness. It is one of the most competitive and ruthless industries but along with these characteristics beauty is introduced through the splendor of the people, ideas and creations.

Elements of the orchid mantis will be taken for design inspiration. bright colors taken from the mantis will be combined with more pure tones such as white and black to create contrast and add interest to the space.

The epidermis of the mantis seems thin and translucent. these characteristics will be applied in the space to create separate work areas without compromising the open feeling of the design.

Additional elements taken from the concept are delicacy, segmentation, strong diagonal line combined with an organic form, the interaction between elements and the environment and the combination of smooth and textured surfaces.

The walls of floor plan mimic the diagonal lines seen within the body of the orchid mantis. The use of transparent fabric panels and frosted glass walls are used to separate spaces while maintaining the feeling of openness and allowing natural light to flow through the space.

Small sitting areas are spread throughout the space to allow for spontaneous meetings and brainstorming.

A large working conference space is located in the center of the office so all employees can be part of the design processes

Built in areas for storage are located throughout the office for easy accessibility by employees.
