ROCK SOLID EXPERTISE
SUCCESSFUL TUNNELLING PROJECT –WHAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE12 March 2015Antti Nykänen

Many interfaces within a project require intense coordination Inaccurate geotechnical information leads to wrong cost estimates and delays in construction Construction works in densely populated areas disturb citizens Many TBM projects starting up in Scandinavia, not too much earlier experiences Project teams have little knowledge about specific local conditions – cooperation with local partners and
authorities is not as fluent as it could be
TYPICAL CHALLENGES IN TUNNELLING PROJECT

Benefits of having one responsible partner throughout the project: Clear roles and responsibilities provide seamless transition
to the next phase in the project Insight across disciplines (tunnel design, tunnel infrastructure design
(e.g. ventilation, electrical and mechanical installations, fire safety) ensures holistic approach and that the needs of the end-users guide both design and execution
WE CAN SUPPORT YOU IN ALL PROJECT PHASES
MARCH 2015PÖYRY - UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES 3
We can support you in:• Studies and investigations • Basic and detailed engineering• Design review / 3rd party audit• Construction supervision and
site inspection• Measurements, monitoring and
documentation• Inspections and refurbishment

Today’s modern infrastructure is often built in ‘soft rock’ (soil) or in an urban environment. This is far more complex than in a greenfield project. To make a demanding project successful, we provide:
Proven methods for safe tunnelling in soil conditions Tailor-made solutions for excavations under existing structures and buildings First-hand experience with the realisation of complex projects in populated areas Logistic concepts to keep the city operational Methods to minimise negative impact on the population and the environment
