Greetings to all Customers and Friends,
I often wondered why caveman drew pictures on walls, then Covid-19 hit this year. I found myself in constant
temptation to make good use out of my daughters colored pencils, as I stared at the walls. I was provided
the opportunity to explore my artistic nature beyond plant photography, and I’d have a better color palette
available than charcoal. Most likely, the drawings would look similar.
The one constant we can probably all agree on in the nursery industry, is that nothing stays the same, and
evolution happens. When I first started in the business 21 years ago, my father was selling over a million
birch seedlings a year, growers still budded red maples, green ash was a hot-ticket seller, and oak seedlings
that resembled hockey sticks were the best! As we sit today, most birch species aren’t what they used to be,
everyone uses rooted cuttings, ashes were all that was left of the Ash market, and the last time I saw a quality
bare root oak seedling, it was drawn on the wall of a cave (with charcoal).
We are in a really exciting time of the nursery industry. We are evolving with new equipment, technology,
growing techniques, containers, LEAN methodology, waste reduction and creativity. Mark Cuban said some
of the best examples of capitalism would evolve from the changes we were forced to make due to the virus
pandemic. The same could most likely be said for our industry. Not only predicated on labor shortages, but
driven by the markets expectations for increasing tree quality standards. It’s in our nature to grow, improve
and evolve into better growers.
This past year we moved all Cercis production from the field to the band pots, BECAUSE we get zero freeze,
root rot, and the plants are incredibly high quality. JLPN continues to counter-balance production costs
(which increases at a far greater speed than our pricing), by identifying and eliminating more waste internally
in our overall system. And most exciting, we are working on developing some new production equipment the
tree industry has yet to see.
Reflecting on the year so far, we hope that our growers were un-affected by the Covid-19, both financially
and health-wise. Quarantine had a silver lining; we all got to experience a modern day, cave-dwellers
existence. I learned a few new board games, spent a pre-summer vacation with the kids, and cooked way
too much. I also decided against starting a Tiger Petting Zoo as a second career. (Only funny if you watched
Netflix for a month)
Lastly, our crop looks absolutely outstanding this season, and it’s
all because of the dedication and drive to continually improve, by
the excellent crew, we are blessed with at JLPN.
Be safe, have a great year, and thank you, for decades of
supporting four generations of Lewis family tree growers.

ROOTED CUTTINGDESCRIPTION
C U T T I N G S
JLPN sells many items by the piece, and not by size, due to the fact that the development of the root system is far more critical to a plants future growth than the height. To clarify the scale, we have provided the following pictures of 25 count, rooted cutting bundles. In all cases, JLPN delivers plants that are healthy and viable, however having two options gives the buyer a little flexibility on price, to fit their growing needs.
Not Advertised for Sale, zero's are just that, zero new growth. They are fully rooted, but only suitable for containers.
1-3" of new growth, and fully rooted. Recommended for growing in container for 1 season, or fields with solid weed control practices.
4"+ of new growth, and fully rooted. All R/C's are topped at a max height of 16". Roots are going to be larger, more durable, and more developed. All plants listed “R/C” are field ready, for transplanting.

41SEE ROOTED CUTTING DESCRIPTION—PAGE 6
Blessed is the only way to describe the wonderful kids we have in our lives. As they get closer to jumping out of the nest, I always wonder/stress if we’ve done enough to prepare them for the jump. The correlation between raising kids, and raising trees, is somewhat ironic to me. You have to give both proper care, nurturing, and preparation for their future, so they will have the base/roots to stay strong when faced with the challenges and storms that come in life. The picture on my desk, of my very young family sitting on a tractor seems like yesterday, but it was 15 years ago. These kind, honest, hard-working and caring kids, are the pride and joy of our family, and a far greater achievement, than anything in business would ever compare to.
