July/August 2015
The Impact
A New Look Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher who lived some five hundred years before the time of
Christ, was heard to have said, “It is in changing that things find purpose.” After many years of a certain style of newsletter, and in an effort to keep you who receive it “tuned in,” Connie and Pastor Phil thought it was time for a change.
For this July/August issue, we will retain the name of our newsletter (“The Impact”), but we are considering changing that. Some of the suggestions have been: “The Gospel According to Glade;” “The Happenings;” “Glade Informer;” “Glade’s Gospel;” and “Glade’s Gatherings.” But, even as we offer these as possibilities, we are open to other suggestions.
Our next newsletter isn’t until September, so you have some time to consider these suggestions, as well as those you might think are fitting. If you decide you would like to have input into any new name that might be chosen, please contact Connie in the office at (301) 845-6775 or e-mail her at secretary@gladechurch.org

The Pastor Ponders About “Standing in the Gap” Her question was a cur ious one: “Do you have a large Hispanic population in your church?” She didn’t identify what news service she was from, but I could tell by the “reporter’s notebook” in her hand that a story on repealing the “English Only Ordinance” (put in place by a previous County Board of Commissioners) was in the works. Because I am somewhat involved with an immigration group in Freder ick County, I wanted to be present for the announcement of this news. One of my friends from that organization, who was being interviewed by the reporter when I showed up, said to her, “Please, I want you to meet Pastor Phil.” The repor ter asked me my name, the church I served, and what motivated me to be there if our congregation didn’t have any “immigrants.” She indicated some were there because of how it has negatively impacted business, others were present because they didn’t care for the actions of that previous Board of Commissioners, but I said, “For me, it is theological. Throughout God’s story,” I went on to say, “hospitality is a central theme to my faith tradition, and, in fact, most of the world’s religions.” She looked perplexed, and that made me wonder. A host of questions star ted running through my mind; faster than they could be processed. “Is the perception that we (including the church) do the right thing hoping to reap a windfall?” “Can those who have been historically oppressed be the only individu-als who are concerned about how our neighbors are treated?” “Is there any room in public discourse for theological reflection?” The announcement regarding the proposed repeal of the ordinance took place the day before the horror of Charleston. When I learned of that tragic and evil act, my mind wondered about what we could do to stand in solidarity with Charleston and, as Parker Palmer would say, “stand in the tragic gap” of these moments. To do nothing, in my mind, is not an option. Of course, anything we might be able to do for Charleston will be rather small because of distance, etc. There are, however, things we can do. We can pray. And, we can look at our own lives to see which spiritual gifts God has given us for the world’s sake. That is, in a time when it appears as if many believe we only do, or should do, that which directly benefits us, what if we discovered the gifts God has entrusted to our care and deployed them for the health of God’s creation? Maybe you’re thinking, “That’s an interesting idea, but how can I figure that out?”
3
I am glad you asked. As I mentioned in worship, and as a way to stand in solidar-ity with Charleston, I will be leading Bible Studies on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. By the time you receive this newsletter, we will already have used our first time together to explore the painful reality of racism and how we, as Christians, are called to respond to this problem. Then, beginning on July 1st, I will lead an eight week study on the topic of “Discovering God’s Vision: You and Your Spiritual Gifts.” This study will not meet on July 15th because of a personal engagement. We will meet on the 8th, 22nd, and 29th in July. In August, we will meet on the evenings of August 5th, 19th, and 26th and in Sep-tember the 2nd & 9th. Upon completion of these studies, we will re-evaluate what kind of interest there is in meeting to study the sacred text and how it helps shape our spiritual lives. It isn’t a huge proposition, and it will take more than meeting on Wednesday eve-nings to help transform a hurting world and divided nation. But, it is something. Moreo-ver, it symbolizes a sense of solidarity and “standing with” those most fully affected by what happened that fateful night. Blessings,
Did You Know? The word “Consistory” is a fancy word for church council?
Church councils are what makes decisions that affect the
church? You might choose to think of it as a “governing

Treasurer & Assistant Treasure Positions
We’re incredibly grateful for Chad Weddle’s commitment to the position of Treasurer
of Glade United Church of Christ. He has given sixteen years of his life to this role, and
it is rare to see such dedication. Recently, he has decided that he would like a change,
and so we received his resignation with regret, but understanding.
When he announced that he intended to resign from the position, the Consistory began
to cull candidates who are skilled in finance and accounting. We are pleased to
welcome Carol Clark as our new treasurer and Stuart Clark as our assistant treasurer.
They will resume their positions beginning August 1st.
Scripture reminds us that each of us has been uniquely blessed by God with at least one
gift, and more than likely more than one. In his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul
wrote, “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good
” (1 Corinthians 12:7).
Thank you, Carol and Stuart, for using the gifts God has given you for the common
good of Glade!

Special Thank You
Glade Church,
Great hearts, warm thank you Glade Church.
Pastor Phil for his many visits, prayers, and talks with me.
what great support that was.
The church family for visits, calls, prayers, and cards.
what a blessing from everyone at Glade Church.
I am still recovering at home and therapy.
Thanks So Much!
Mike Powers & family
To Our Friends at Glade Church,
Thank you for all your cards of warm thoughts and prayers on the passing of Mike’s
dad. It is truly a blessing to belong to such a wonderful and caring church family.
With Love, The Kreimers
Hospitality: A Touchstone of Faith
As you may know, Pastor Phil is part of a group called “The Frederick Immigration Coalition.” Originally given birth by the Archdiocese of Baltimore (Catholic), it has become an ecumenical group and there are some who participate who claim no faith tradition.
One of the efforts the group is currently focused on is repealing the “English Only” ordinance put in place in 2012.
It has been reported that the business community favors its repeal because of the antagonistic tone the ordinance sets. And, there are other interested groups who would like to see a change.
The Frederick Immigration Coalition favors its repeal because, among other reasons, it sends a message that Frederick County is inhospitable.
Many congregations have sought signatures to present to the County Council to show the community’s support of a repeal. If you are interested in participating in this endeavor, please contact Pastor Phil.

Mental Health Association
The Mental Health Association of Frederick County has served the community as a
private, non-profit organization since 1965. A leader in creating services that respond to
the changing mental health needs in our community, the Mental Health Association of
Frederick County is a place where people can be heard and receive support.
Our programs aspire to promote positive mental health and offer not just education, but
the support and compassion needed to make real and lasting changes in the lives of those
we serve.
Your support enables us to provide suicide/crisis intervention,
professional therapy
services on a sliding scale basis, trained advocates for children
in the foster care system, and child abuse prevention programs
that strengthen and empower Frederick’s children and families.
Interfaith Housing Alliance (IHA) strengthens communities by providing affordable
housing opportunities and supportive services to improve the quality of life and
economic stability for seniors, working families and individuals.
The IHA housing programs include affordable homeownership opportunities and rental
home communities. IHA manages all of its rental homes, ensuring responsiveness to
residents’ needs and long term investment in the neighborhoods we serve. Our
community-friendly approach means that the needs of neighbors will always be taken
into consideration as well. We work hard to ensure that our homes are a source of pride
for residents and an asset to their communities.
“Interfaith—the name speaks for itself! The organization is a gift to my family. The
support and dedication from the staff is unbelievable.” ~ Latia R., Self-Help Participant

Glade UCC Looking at Investments
Since January 2015, an Investment Committee, appointed by the Consistory has been
looking at methods to obtain better returns on funds the church possesses. With CD rates
well under 1% and the base inflation rate almost 2%, technically, we lose money by not at
least matching inflation.
The committee is lead by co-Chairs Adrian Wodey and Andre Cornelis. Also on the
committee is Dick Gilbert, Connie Rough, and Alan Ven Douern. Assisting in this pro-
cess has been Chad Weddle and Brooks Widder, Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer, and
Pastor Phil.
The process has involved meeting with a number of investment professionals, analyzing
their information and products, and developing an Investment Policy to help manage the
risk and any costs associated with this while providing direction going forward for the
church. The overall desired result is to increase our returns on our monies while taking an
acceptable levels of risk, appropriate for Glade UCC
On July 12th, the Consistory and the Investment Committee will beholding an informa-
tional session where members can review how the investment process will work and have
a chance to ask questions. The session will be held approximately 30 minutes after church
concludes so members can still take in refreshments and then attend the session.
The Consistory has approved the Investment Policy submitted to them by the Investment
Committee. If you would like to review the Investment Policy before the informational
meeting scheduled for July 12th, please contact the office.
We hope you can attend.

Care Givers
I’ve always been a fan of the writings of Dr. Seuss—-the non-sensical rhymes often brining a no-nonsense message. I came across this quote which does just that:
“Unless someone like you
Cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better,
It’s not!” Let’s each take the message to heart, doing our part, by caring for others, making our community a bit better, one kindness at a time.
REMINDER: The Care Givers and Prayer Shawl Ministry Teams will enjoy a picnic at the home of Tim & Jan Dinterman on Thursday, August 20th at 5:30 p.m. Meats, drinks, & table settings will be provided. Ministry team members are asked to bring a side dis to share——& you are also encour-aged to invite and bring a guest with you. Please RSVP to Connie Rough, Betty Baggett, or Becky Duncan in order for us to have ample amount of meat and drinks.
Care-Giving Ministry
Prayer Shawl Ministry
With the abundance of yarn that many of you have donated to our
ministry, at our June meeting, the members have decided to make some
handmade items (with our love and comfort wrapped in each) for some
local organizations. We will be making shawls and lap blankets for the
cancer centers and baby items for the NICU program. Thanks for your
donations of yarn and supplies
The Prayer Shawl Ministry will not meet in July. Our next meeting will
be our annual picnic at Tim & Jan Dinterman’s as mentioned by Becky
in the Care-Giving article listed above.

Glade Players
A PLAYERS EVENT
We're planning a big fellowship event! Our church will be hosting a "Back to the 1940's"
day on Saturday, October 10th. Starting at 4:00 p.m., guests will participate in a number
of activities all based on the 40's. There will be a memory walk with clues to old radio
shows, as well as television shows for the younger folks. We'll have posters, music,
snacks, a COBBLER COOK-OFF, and a video presentation of pictures provided by our
members. After a supper of foods popular in the 40's, the Players will present "The
Jimmy Wilkins Show," based on the music and humor of radio shows.
Senior groups and Homewood will be invited, as well as our local community. The
Consistory has voted some funding so that we can charge only a small amount. Cost for
the meal will be $3.00 per person or $10.00 per family.
Help from church members is definitely needed. There will be sign-up sheets for
Jello salads, Cook-Off entries, and cookies. We urge you to right now look through
pictures and select a picture of you or an older relative or anything you think would be of
interest in the presentation. Drop it off in the office with your name on it, and we will
return it to you. If you would like to help with set-up or decorations or have questions or
suggestions, please call Carol Lambie at 301-304-0805 or lambie.lane@comcast.net.

review all of the many accomplishments our graduates have accomplished thus far in
their young lives.
Each graduate’s name was read, and those who were in attendance (or family represent-
ing them) came forward and were presented a special gift in recognition of their accom-
plishments
Pastor Phil offered a prayer of thanks for the gifts by which God has blessed them, and
the congregation expressed its sense of pride.

(Connie and Ron Rough, Jan and James Dinterman with behind the scenes
logistics from Tim, Elaina and Lisa Frederick,
