and Politics Is That a Fact? Fact Checking in the Media

Panel presentations and discussions with local people from outside the library

Intended to help students understand real world uses of IL

Why Hold a Forum?

Proves that real people need to find, evaluate, and use information!

Shows relevance of IL topics to students’ real lives and fosters lifelong learning.

Supports ACRL Information Literacy Standards #3 “…evaluates information and its sources critically…” #5 “…understands many of the economic, legal, and social

issues surrounding the use of information…” Shows the library’s vitality and increases the

library’s visibility on campus!

IL course = captive audience!

No course? Partner and promote the event with friendly faculty in related disciplines.

Some faculty will be very open -- even excited -- about the opportunity to link course content to daily life and lifelong learning!

Those faculty could use this as a teaching moment, requesting a response paper on the forum.

(Certainly, you all know at least a couple of these..?)

Consider break schedules: not too close to break, as students may be leave early...

And they may not be back on the Monday after break, either!

Avoid midterms, finals, sporting events, previously scheduled event series, etc.

Family can be cheap! Consider small bribes.

Friends and others may be bought with the promise of dinner out and that line they can add to their CVs.

Once you’ve done it a few times, your institution may pony up. Use the foot-in-the-door technique!

Investigate institutional grants or sources for visiting speakers.

Don’t be afraid to ask!

Getting the Word Out

Assign one person as the press contact to facilitate communication.

Create a press release to distribute to your institution’s news office and the press.

departments

Contact your college or university newspaper

Provide an abstract and press release content to your Webmaster -- it’ll make it easier to cut and paste info into a template for your institution’s web site.

Technology: It Always Works During Rehearsal If using a room elsewhere, preview and test

the in-house equipment thoroughly. Arrange for wireless mics, test them, and

bring extra batteries. If you can, BYO laptop and cables.

Don’t forget bottled water for the speakers!
