MARCOSACCO–ITIA-CNR,ItalyAugmented&VirtualRealityEnablerforthe“Factory4.0”
Manufacturing sector transformation (the so call Factory4.0) requires the introductionof advanced tools forboth the knowledge representationand simulation. Forover 10 years,VirtualReality andAugmentedRealityhave generated benefits in several sectors thanks to the potentialities offered by these visualisationtechnologiesabletoprovideanaddedvaluetothecontentsanddataenrichment.Manufacturing companies, thanks to the reduction of cost and a widespread of devices, could now takeadvantageintegratingAR/VRtosimulationandemergingAI.TheresultisaVirtualFactory,afulldigitaltwinofthe real plant, that could be used for several purposes, from design to monitoring and logistics, fromreconfigurationtotraining.Someindustrialapplicationswillbepresented.
MARCELLOCARROZZINO–ScuolaSuperioreSant’Anna,ItalyOpportunitiesoftheuseofEmbodiedAgentsinVirtualRealityforCulturalHeritage
Virtual Reality is becoming an increasingly important tool for the research, the communication and thepopularizationof culturalheritage.Howevermostof theavailable3D interactive reconstructionsofartefacts, monuments and sites oftenmiss an important factor: human presence. Thanks to the advancements in thetechnology, in latest years Virtual Humans have started being used in a variety of cultural-related VRapplications. Fromsimple2Dcharacters to complex3Davatars, technology continues toevolveand so is theadoptionofvirtualassistantsindigitalheritage.Theacceptanceofsuchtoolsdeservesagreaterattentionfromthescientificcommunity.This talk will explore the state-of-the-art on this subject, underlining the technological challenges and alsoanalysingtheeffectsofavatarinteractiononuserengagement, senseofimmersionandlearningeffectiveness.

ImmersiveVirtualRealityhasbeenexperimentingaconstantdevelopmentandhasbecomemoreandmorepopular in the last times. This development has been mainly focused in the visual modality. However, auditory stimuli can also be very powerful in creating immersive perceptions. In this context, three-dimensionallocalizationofsoundsourcesplaysanimportantroleinthesesystems.3Daudiotechniquesallowtoproducetheperceptioninthelistenerthatasoundsourceisvirtuallylocatedanywhere in the 3D space, including behind or above the listener. They are not new, but, with theadvancements in computationalpower, it is nowpossible toperform the requiredprocessing in real timeusingaffordableequipment.Therefore,theinterestfor3Dsoundhasbeenincreasing.Additionally,soundismodifiedbytheenvironmentandthisisespeciallyrelevantwhensimulatingspatialsound.Theperceptionofsound includes a combination of the original sound emitted by the source, modifications due to theenvironmentandmodificationsproducedbythelistener’shead.Allthosemodificationscanbecharacterizedandappliedinasimulationinordertovirtuallylocateasourceinaspecificplacewithinagivenenvironment.Inthistalk,thefundamentalsofseveraltechniquesof3Daudiowillbepresented,withspecialattentiontothosemoresuitableforaffordableVirtualRealitysystems.Morespecifically,thepotentialofbinauralaudioandvirtualAmbisonicswillbepresented.Inadditiontothis,theroleoftheenvironmentandhowitcanbeconsideredwillalsobediscussed.Finally,using3DaudioinaVirtualRealitysystemrequirestoknowsomebasicconceptsofrealtimeaudio,whichwillbeaddressedaswell.Moreover,themaindecisionsandtrade-off to be taken when implementing a 3D sound renderer will be discussed, presenting the practicalimplicationsofeachofthem.
