OnechurchinOklahomahasanEpiscopalpriestservingaLutherancongregation,McKeesaid,butTrinitywillbeoneofthefewchurcheswithaLutheranministeronstaff.ThatAlsayisanAfrican‐Americanservinginapredominantlywhiteparishisevenmoreunusual.HeisthefirstblackmemberoftheclergytoserveatTrinity.

Alsaydidn’tcometoTrinitybecauseofhisdenominationorhisrace,McKeesaid.Hebringsexceptionalgifts.Heisoutgoingandevangelical.HeisanativeTulsanwithsolidrootsintheblackcommunity.Hebringsdiversitytoourparish.Furthermore,heunderstandsandappreciatestheEpiscopalliturgy.

startedatTrinity)includedevelopingparishhospitalityandevangelism.Aspartofthepastoralstaff,hepreachesandteachesclasses.

Beingafirstisnothingnewtothecurate.WhenhewasordainedAug.6attheEpiscopalcathedralinPhiladelphia,itwassaidhewasthe

“AtOklahomaBaptistUniversity,weattendedchapeleveryday,”Fr.Joesaid,“butSundays,IbribedmyroommatewithapizzatodrivemetoanEpiscopalchurch.”

firstLutherantobeordainedinanEpiscopalcathedral.WhenheservedatthePrinceofPeaceLutheranChurchinTulsawhileattendingPhillipsTheologicalSeminary,hewasthefirstlicensedministeroftheWordandSacramentsintheArkansasandOklahomaSynod.

HisordinationinPhiladelphiawascelebratedatnoon,attendedbythreebishopsandotherclergy,

includingMcKee.At10a.m.thatsameday,hewasmarriedinthecathedraltoCeceliaGray,anativeofPhiladelphiaandasocialworker.Areceptionwasheldbetweentheservices.

Alsay,(now36),saidheknewatage5thathewantedtobeapreacher.Hepreachedhisfirstsermonatage13attheProgressiveBaptistChurchinTulsafromtheGenesisstoryofAbrahambuildingaltars.

Thefledglingpreacherwassoshortatthattimethathehadtostandonastackofplatformsandhisvoice,hesaid,washigh‐pitched.“Mymother,withthesharpearsofateacher,heardsomeonesay,‘Thatwasmorelikeaspeechthanasermon.Hedidn’thaveanyhoopandholler.’Ihavehoopnow,”Alsaysaid,“butIdidn’tthen.”

AlthoughraisedintheBaptistfaith,hesaidhealwayshadbeenattractedtoaliturgicalchurch.“AtOklahomaBaptistUniversity,weattendedchapeleveryday,”hesaid,“butSundaysIbribedmyroommatewithapizzatodrivemetoanEpiscopalchurch.”
