Michael McInturf Architects CincinnatiSmall architecure firm that test the limits of modern design, often with a small budget. Collaboration on several projects including residential, early childhood, cultural and athletic. A flexible structure rewards the self initiated action and exploration.

Word Play CincinnatiAn after school volunteer program that simulta neously targets iliteracy, and the harmful behavior that arises from excessive free time in northern Cincinnati. Focusing on communication and co operation, it is easy to learn as much as the kids in this commendably innovative family.

Alternative Spring Break MexicoA study abroad program run by the YMCA that encourages cultural sharing. In Mexico Cityand a few surrounding areas they provide the op portunity to connect with children and people with special needs. A host family greatly aids in produc ing a strong knowledge of the Spanish language and the local culture.

USAC Chile ChileStudy abroad experience in Chile that provided college level courses and ample opportunity tolearn Spanish and about the surrounding area. This destination was chosen for its psycological significance as well as it’s climatic diversity, both of which are hugely significant in architecture.

Governor’s School for the ArtsA competative summer program where high school students are given an immersive studio setting in their respective field of interest. After learning directly from practicing architects, all students in the program recieve free instate tuition to every public school in the state as well as many other out of state scholarships.

Canstruction CompetitionThis competition, which has participants from many of the major design firms in the Cincinnati area, aims to increase sympathy for the hungry people in the local area. Each team must build a sculpture out of cans which will then be donated to a local food bank. My design was chosen to represent The University of Cincinnati’s College of Design Architecture, Art, and Planning and ended up winning the Spirit Award.

3D PRINTING

What would become a master’s studio started as an exploration in tec-tonics, in this case, an ancient Persian variety of dome structure. I took the opportunity of 3D printing to create a highly complex shape to find a logic in the replication of a dome.

TECTONICS

Adapting the tec-tonics to the con-ditions of the site which favored an open and linear configuration to emprace surround-ing Mount Airy forest.

PROGRAM

The program includes living space for students and teachers as well as fully equiped studios, which are raised to the second floor. Views are framed in every di-rection, reducing the structure to only a roof.

At Michal McInturf Architects, I worked on the Leon-ard Athletic Center, an addition and refurbish to an existing building on Cincinnati Country Day Schools Campus, a private highschool in Indian Hill Cincin-nati. The main challenges were an awkward existing condition, and designing a building that could both stand out and fit into the vernacular of the context. The program is designed to accomodate grades school gym classes as well as senior athletics

ITERATIONS

The cascading form references the Seven Hills are and makes up for the context that was lacking in the first design. Offering an indoor outdoor pool and rentalable studio space, this design encourages and active and healthy community.

CHALLENGE

To revitalize a failing parking garage in the middle of downtown Cincinnati using a theatre, a pool, and optional third program.

GOAL

Provide a space for the community to enjoy and be proud of. Cincinnati offers a rising culture for active and healthy people. At the same time, downtown is the buisness center of the Tri-state area. How can a building provide a convenient opportunity to be active and at the same time bring green space back into the center of downtown?

ANSWER

Using the prime location provided by the given site, a failing parking garage, the resulting design combines several active and cultural elements into one large space. During the day, an in-door - outdoor pool offers year round use along with a large green house space that can be used season-round as yoga studios, martial arts studios, art galleries, private events, and more. At night, a performance enriches the experiences and continues to bring culture and community directly to the most dense part of Cincinnati.

COOPERATIVE INTERN-SHIP

At the premier Los Ange-les architectural firm Mar-mol Radziner interns are exposed to a wide range of responsibilities and ex-periences. Above are two sketches with some large changes that go un-noticed at first glance. To the right a client explores lighting opptions and their affect on where she places paintings from her father’s prestigious collection.

CLIENT VISUALIZATION

A recording studio and of-fice on Hollywood Boule-vard came in over budget and so more economical options became relevant. The resulting renders were generated from previously commisioned images. The front facade and rear patio were updated to display several options that were then presented to the client.

KENTER CANYON ELEMENTARY

Updates to an elementary school provided leadership roles in Revit and render-ing. From initial design, to visualization, to construction documents, I was given full reign to explore the best options for this space. The final design included and outdoor classroom that takes advantage of the Mediteranean climate and several updates to the blacktop play area that had fallen to an unchild-like environment.

LE MODULAR

Using the Human Body as a precedent, spaces were explored in 2D and then 3D.

LE MODULAR

Two units were used to create this curving bench which could act as a threshold from one space to the next or as a place of repose in a beautiful place.

LE MODULAR

Several of the 3D studies were combined to create this park space which offers an experience for all ages from a place to sit, to a huge wall to climb.

CANSTRUCTION COMPETITON

Developed and presented the winning design as team to a class of 140. The chosen team was then in charge of build-ing a structure out of canned food to bring awareness to the hungry and also to provide food for the local food kitchens. All the cans used were donated.

PERSONAL ARTWORK
