INTRODUCTION The problem of estimating the discrete and continuous state of a

stochastic linear hybrid system, given only the continuous system output data, is studied. Well established techniques for hybrid estimation, known as the Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation algorithm, and the Interacting Multiple Model algorithm, are first reviewed. Conditions that must be satisfied in order to guarantee the convergence of these hybrid estimation algorithms are then presented. These conditions also provide a means to predict, as a function of the system parameters, which transitions in a hybrid system are relatively easy to detect. A new variant of hybrid estimation algorithms, called the Residual-Mean Interacting Multiple Model (RMIMM) algorithm, is then proposed and analyzed. The performance of RMIMM is demonstrated through multi-modal aircraft trajectory tracking examples.

Fills the gap between ‘last knownposition’ and actual location

TRACKING TECHNOLOGY

• Even the GPS is global by its definition, the most of communications are not

• The “Next” airspace surveillance systems under development kept rudiments of their origin from radar transponders• Backward compatibility is surely necessary for Air Traffic Control but not for an independent redundant tracking system

• The weak point of any tracking system is its communication link

• Existing global satellite communication networks simply couldn’t adsorb data traffic associated with continuous tracking of tenths of thousands flights• • To be commercially viable and acceptable for most of end users the cost per tracking point must be reduced several orders in magnitude

NANO TECHNOLOGY• Save lives awaiting rescue in unknown remote locations

• Save the face of modern technology

• Real world application of eruptive developments of nano satellites, digital signal processing and communications

• Provide airlines, leasing and insurance companies, marketer strategists etc. with near real time and structured tracking data

• Minimum cost/development Time

• High redundancy

• Increasing number of satellites along with subscribers increasing

• Mass production

• Reliability/cost optimization

• To broadcast continuously airplane position, and essential status data via satellite network.• To be always ON in flight and to require no operator intervention or even preclude it.• To be fully autonomous and as possible independent from other airplane systems,• To be self-contained and self powered.• Simple, reliable, affordable.• Easy to install on existing planes with no• significant modifications and heavy licensing.

CONCLUSION

Several hybrid estimation algorithms have existed for many

years. We have performed a detailed steady-state and transient analysis of these algorithms and derived necessary conditions for correct mode detection, bounds on performance (in terms of the mode detection delay and the minimum sojourn time), and also proposed a way to predict a priori which mode transitions are the easiest to detect.

We have validated our results using simulated experiments

motivated from aircraft tracking problems.
