Preface The present manuscript is a dictionary of the Kalabari language, originally in the possession of the late Kay Williamson of the University of Port Harcourt. The author is anonymous, but internal evidence suggests if must have been prepared in the 1960s or 1970s. That it survives is due to Silvia Kouwenberg of the University of the West Indies, who took a photocopy of the typescript while in Nigeria in the 1990s, as part of fieldwork on the Kalabari language. The original typescript was nowhere to be found in Professor Williamson’s house, following her death in 2005. The pdf version presented here was prepared by Dr. Kouwenberg from her photocopy. Ideally the dictionary should be published, although it would be helpful to discover the author and give him or her credit. The manuscript was word-processed at the behest of Dr. Kouwenberg, but it has proven difficult to translate the file into a modern format. If it is possible eventually to produce a more useable manuscript, an introduction can be written and the text updated with the collaboration of the Kalabari community.
