& Tasting Notes
We are the second oldest CAMRA festival, andwe can’t believe that this is our 40th one.
CAMRA is the Campaign for Real Ale, whichexists to protect and promote traditional Britishbeers and ciders. Festivals are a good way ofshowing the wonderful variety, from straw-coloured refreshing bitters to rich dark stouts.
40th Kent Beer Festival 3
CAMRA is also concerned about the closure ofso many pubs. You can join CAMRA here at ourCAMRA shop. The benefits of joining includefree entry to most festivals, plus discounts atmany pubs. There is also a membershipform at the back of this programme.
Our first Kent Beer Festival was on SaturdayJune 21st 1975 in a marquee in Dane JohnGardens, Canterbury.
First Kent Beer Festival 1975I was the festival organiser (I still am), and Itook a van around the country to collect myfavourite beers. I got Hoskins (Leicester),Yorkshire Clubs, Belhaven (Dunbar), Jennings(Cockermouth), Hydes and Boddingtons (bothfrom Manchester) and Morlands (Abingdon). We also had Brakspears, Eldridge Pope, Fullers,Harveys, King & Barnes, Ridleys, Ruddles andYoungs. Our Kent beers were from the only twobreweries in Kent, Shepherd Neame andWhitbread Fremlins. Our only cider was fromBob Luck’s at Benenden.
We sold about 600 tickets at 50p each. The beerssold out early, and the festival made a profit of£43.51. I think we charged about 15p per pint.
We started doing souvenir glassesin 1976. This is the first pint glass with itsgreen logo - have you got one?
Of the nine Kent Beer Festivalsin Dane John, the mostmemorable for the staff was theone when the marquee turned
up a day late. We had to put up the beeroutdoors, and guard it overnight. Passers-bycouldn’t believe their eyes.
First Kent Beer Festival 1975. Note that the beer is onrailway sleepers. We had to do a lot of bending downbut we were younger then.
Right: The marquee goes up over the beer. Note thewooden casks.

The festival was in Dane John until 1983. Itseemed a good idea to move when the offices inDane John became residential flats. We were atthe Kent County Cricket Ground in Canterburyfor two years, then at the Woodville Hall inGravesend in 1986. The Woodville Halls are agood venue, but we realised that our festivalneeds a more outdoor location. It is essentially asummer festival. Our licensee, Derry Williams ofthe Three Horseshoes, Lower Hardres, suggested the barn at Merton Farm, and we’vebeen there since 1987. In the early days, we usedonly half the barn: note the wall of hay in thisphoto and the invading pig.
We also introduced thepopular free bus service. In the cutting oppositefrom the Kentish Gazette, thetall bearded chap in the white shirt is ourlate licensee, Derry, who died in 1998and is sorely missed. The photo alsoshows three members of the Mendhamfamily: Kae, Mick and Frank, who
have been associated with the festival since itsearliest days.
Girlie BarOne innovation thatattracted a lot of attentionwas the Pink Girlie Bar, atongue-in-the-cheekname for a bar thatencouraged womenwho didn’t normallydrink beer to give it ago. It worked. We celebrated our
25th anniversary in 1999. By then there were 10breweries in Kent. We asked them to produce aspecial anniversary beer with a silver theme, andthey all came up trumps. The photo shows theLord Mayor with me and our press officer, MaryGalliers, and the Shepherd Neame silver beer,Argentum Canticorum.
Well, we are still going strong. There are now nearly 30breweries in Kent so we arehard-pushed to find room forthem all on the Kent Bar.There has also been a bigincrease in cider producers, sofor the last few years all ourciders have been Kentish ones.
This is my last year as organiser –it’s time after 40 years to hand overthe job to Andy Mitchell. It’s beengreat fun, and I’ll still be involved!

40th Kent Beer Festival 21
DOWN
By the time the first Kent Beer Festival was held in 1975,the county was down to its last three breweries.Whitbread (Wateringbury), Whitbread Fremlins(Faversham) both of which were closed in the 1980sand more happily, still going strong, Shepherd Neame. The first of Kent’s micro-breweries was (I think) theshort-lived Canterbury Brewery, which set up in 1979appropriately enough, in the cooperage of the old Flint’s
Brewery, St. Dunstan’s Street, Canterbury. Since then, some 40 micro-breweries have been established, most ofwhich are happily still with us and continuing thetradition of producing excellent Kentish ales.
In the word search grid are the names of 40 Kent Micro-breweries, running horizontally, vertically anddiagonally, backwards as well as forwards. Good Luck!
