KIM TREE

Developing an effective lesson plan

Starting Point

• Check the Unit Specification– Check the date – Check the version– Check for changes– Check the assessment guidelines– Check the unit number

Topics to be covered

• Detailed by outcome– Knowledge and skills gives details– Evidence requirements covers what

students must know

• You must teach ALL that is covered in the Unit Specification

Review the Topics

• Make sure you understand them

• Make sure you are up to date with current business practices

• Make sure you know the requirements of current UK legislation

Timing of class

• What time of day is the class?– This is important in preparing a lesson plan

• First thing in the morning – good

• Straight after lunch – more of a challenge

• End of the day – not good

• Poor attendance = poor results

Review the topics

• Not necessary to teach outcomes in order for all units

• Look at what works well

• EG Business Accounting

• Plan the time you have in hours

• Build in weeks for revision for topics

Resources

• Compile a list of the resources you have available for each topic

• Make sure you have a range of resources

• Remember students have different ways of learning

• One size does not fit all

Teaching plan preparation

• Work out how many hours you have allocated

• Your own knowledge will help you to identify time required to teach each topic

• The hours may not be evenly spread

• Ensure you have each topic covered

Mix of resources

• Textbooks

• Additional resources:– Internet– Newspapers– Practical exercises

Timing of session

• Morning – opportunity to deliver materials as you wish

• After lunch – have plenty of practical exercises ready to follow short sessions of input – 10 minutes at a time

• Later in day – input delivery first then practical exercises to retain interest

Lesson Plan

• Note the purpose of each session

• Identify the resources you will need– Notes for learning– Textbooks– Photocopies of practical exercises– Solutions to exercises!

Review your plan

• Your plans may work with one group but not another

• Be prepared to review and revise your plan

• Have alternatives to your plan in place• It’s a work in progress• Like all journeys you may need to revise

your route!
