We live on Kauai. We expect to pay more for electricity.

The National average is 12.54 cents per KWH

KIUC charges about 3 times that.

ApproximateKIUC rate

To read a meter

The industry average is 50 cents.

KIUC charges about 20 times that.

Why are we paying $10.27 per month to have a meter read?

Meter Readers Management

3 meter readers to read 3000 meters a month

means each meter reader reads 1000 a month.

With holidays and vacations (that we pay for),

say they work 21 days a month.

That means each meter reader reads

fewer than 48 meters a day.

Does KIUC think we can'tdo simple math?

Remember that average ofover 600 meters read in a day?

Here is a quote from an article about a meter reader on foot in Northern Indiana BEFORE they had meters that can be read from a distance:

"This time of year, his trek to read 500 or so natural gas and electric meters per day is often through a foot or more of snow and in temperatures down to 0

Ever see snow and ice on Kauai?Source:http://www.nwitimes.com/news/local/the-danger-of-being-a-meter-reader/article_e4947cc2-2279-5ce3-b217-522f2b55b49a.html?print=true&cid=print

degrees. That also means the meter is often shrouded in ice, fence gates are frozen shut, and dogs seem edgier than usual."

KIUC's claim: Other Incremental CostsSource: KIUC handout at 12/17/13 board meeting.

Line

There ARE Smart Meter Hardware Fees and

Smart Meter Software Maintenance Fees.

How much are these Smart Meter Fees?

Aren't we ALL paying these Smart Meter Fees?

There are no hardware or software parts to maintain in an Analog Meter.

Check this out:A pallet of 96 Smart Meters is 31” x 46” x 37” tall.

Stacked 2 pallets high, A space just over 10' x 15' will hold 3,000 meters!

Do you have a corner of your garage you'd like to rent out for $18,800 a year?

KIUC Claim: Yearly Costs to Monthly Costs.

Line

$10.27 per meter read!

The industry average is 50 cents per meter read.

Does it seem reasonablethat Kauai's people should pay 20 timesthe industry average to have their meters read?

Source: KIUC handout at 12/17/13 board meeting.

Are there proven ways KIUCcould cut meter reading costs?

Yes!Many other power companies offer some or all of the following options to monthly meter reading visits:

1. Post Cards2. email entry3. Sending in a picture4 Online (fully automated)5. Phone (fully automated)6. Averaging (KIUC has been doing this for years for some – meters read every other month or every 3rd month)

KIUC website claim:”The staff time required to handle 3,000 individual emails, postcards or photos and input the information... would far

exceed the cost of sending out meter readers.”

Again, some simple math:

3 employees working 21 days a month

8 hours/day X 60 min/hr = 30,240 minutes.

30,240 / 3,000 = 10.08 minutes

10 minutes to type a meter reading?

Do you believe this? And: phone system and online entry need not take any KIUC employee entry time!

To sum this up:Cost per meter read
