We are excited for the 2015-16 school year as we welcome the class of 2019 and new students and families to BHS. Our school is a special place where our faculty truly care about each student in our school. We strive to help all students grow academically and socially as we challenge and support students in their school experiences.
Starting this school year, our state’s learning standards are now aligned to the Common Core State Standards in math and English language arts. The transition began when State Superin-tendent Randy Dorn adopted the new standards in 2011. Each school district has been making the transition according to what works best for their teachers and students.
New state standards mean new state tests. Washington is participating in the Smarter Bal-anced Assessment Consortium, along with 23 other states. It is a state-led consortium working to develop next-generation assessments that accurately measure student progress toward col-lege- and career- readiness.
This spring students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11 will take the Smarter Balanced tests in math and English language arts. Passing the 11th-grade Smarted Balanced tests is not required for graduation until the Class of 2019 (this year’s 9th graders). Please see the next page for assessment requirements by class.
The new learning standards are more challenging than the standards they replaced. Some students who were considered proficient using the old standards will have a more difficult time reaching proficiency using the new standards. The results from these new tests will give a more accurate picture of whether students are on track to be college or career ready after high school.
For more information about the Smarter Balanced tests and to try out a practice test your-self, please visit www.k12.wa.us/smarter. More information about Common Core may be found at www.k12.wa.us/corestandards.
Please call or email your child’s counselor if you have questions about the required state test-ing.
Thank you for continuing to work with us to make sure your child is successful. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to better support your child. We want your child to leave us with a solid foundation of skills and a future full of opportunities.

BHS KNIGHT ACADEMY
Knight Academy began on September 15. This is an after school academic support center for students where stu-dents have access to library resources, computers and tu-toring.
Knight Academy is after school until 4:00 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays and after school until 2:00 pm on Wednesdays.
GRADPOINT
GradPoint is in full swing, with students working hard to retrieve lost credits or accrue deficient credits. All parents wishing to monitor their student’s progress are encour-aged to ask your student to log into GradPoint via Mrs. McKnight’s teacher page and show you how they are do-ing. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Mrs. McKnight directly at 473-0993 or email her at Darcy.McKnight@bremertonschools.org.
DON’T FORGET TO PURCHASE YOUR ASB CARD!
Purchasing an ASB card supports extra-curricular pro-grams and saves students money in the long run with free entry to sporting events and discounts to other ASB spon-sored events. The cost is $40 and cards may be purchased at the finance window.
REMINDER ABOUT ABSENCES
All absences should be excused by either a phone call to the Attendance Office (360-473-0813), by written note, or on Skyward Family Access. You can leave a message on the attendance line at any time of the day or night. We ask that you excuse your student within two school days of the absence. Notes and phone calls that are turned in excessively late may be counted against your student for BECCA truancy purposes.
PREARRANGED ABSENCES: Students who know ahead of time they are going to be out of school for any reason should fill out a pre-arranged absence form. Forms can be obtained in the Attendance Office.
For more information, please call the Attendance Office at 360-473-0813.
CUSTODY ISSUES Many families struggle with custody issues between the parents. The school has no authority or legal jurisdiction to refuse a biological parent access to their child and/or their child's educational records. The only exception is when there is current legal documentation on file with the school such as restraining orders or parenting plans spe-cifically stating visitation limitations during the time the child is at school. Any student release situation which leaves the student's welfare in question will be handled at the discretion of the principal/designee or the school resource officer based on documentation available to the school. If you have questions, please talk with the principal.
CLASS OF 2016!!!
Seniors!! National Achiever was here on September 25th during Knight Skills to share information about order-ing your cap and gown, class ring, and graduation an-nouncements. EQUAL OPPORTUNITY SCHOOLS (EOS)
Bremerton High is searching for our missing Advanced Placement (AP)
Students! It turns out that more than half a million capable low-
income students and students of color are “missing” from AP partici-
pation. At BHS we are committed to finding our missing AP students.
As part of our strategy, we have partnered with Equal Opportunity
Schools (EOS) to survey our students and staff members in order to
help identify our capable missing students.
Nationally, this gap is enrollment of low-income students and students
of color is referred to as the opportunity gap. BHS wants to close this
gap for our students in order to expand their experience in high school
and open opportunities for higher education when they graduate.
