2. Why has demand increased for holidays into extreme environments?

1. Increased wealth (more money to spend visiting extreme environments)

2. Places are becoming more accessible than ever (e.g. Antarctica)

3. Growing popularity of eco-tourism into remote parts of the world (e.g. Amazon rainforest)

4. Marketing. More places are promoted to people today (e.g. seeing a cruise to Antarctica advertised in the Sunday Papers!) E.g. here

3. What are the impacts of tourism on extreme

environments? Positive Negative

Dilutes local culture as tourists bring bad habits and globalisation

Tourists pay little attention to protecting the environment. This means that some rare habitats can be heavily damaged.

As tourists are visiting very extreme locations (surfing in Antarctica) they are unlikely to cause mass damage.

Tourists promote destinations by ‘word of mouth’ and places soon become at risk of being loved to death as more people visit it.

Tourists will bring an economic boost

to often very undeveloped areas
