Edutainment

‘No… LAMS does not make them as busy as Canadian beavers…it

might…it could’

‘Now listen up! I know you want to get started with LAMS….but we’re going to do this alphabetically.

Damn!!

‘They’re doing it! ….I told you you they would

Engage: Establishing Presence

Engage: Creating Purpose

• To get to know more about the behaviours of polymer. • To have a better understanding in material properties

and tests • to gain a deeper understanding of engrg materials. • Go thorugh the lecture videos.

- Attempt the online learning activities.- Identify areas/topics which I'm not familiar with for discussion.

• My goal is to acquire the knownledge in polymer for design and application as well as to have the engineering concept for the mechanics og polymer.

Engage: Responses

• Firstly to get overview of subject of material science which include metal, semiconductors, polymers and ceramics.Secondly to study physical chemistry or thermodynamics point of view of material science.Thirdly, to study more specialized area of materials like Solid State Physics, Electrocrystallization, nanomaterials etc... which are currently at forefront of research.

• time management. juggling between school and work.

Engage: Responses

Activate: Prior Knowledge

• Both shrink but the shrink wrap shrink more than metals • because of the contraction of polymer chains present in the non-

crystalline plastic.• Plastic have molecular structure and metal have not. • As shrink wrap plastic sheet is made of long oriented molecular

chain. Once When heated, the polymer shrinks and then returns to its preferred random and disordered structur while in metal sheet's case it is made of ordered crystallized structure which on heating will not shrink as much as wrap plastic shrink .

• generally, metal is composed of crystal and the interation between atoms is matallic bond, while the interaction betwwen the intermolecular chain of polymer is covalent bond and interaction of individual molecular chain is always Van'De Wallce foece or hydrogen bond, which is much weaker than metallic bond and covalent bond

Demonstrate

Apply: Knowledge

• A-site vacancy • O-site vacancies • A: B-site vacancy would be formed.

PLZT is ABO3 perovskite structure;A site ion is Pb and La, (1-x)+x=1, no A-site vacancy;B site ion is Ti and Zr, [(1-y)+y]*(1-x/4)=<1, would form B-site vacancy.

• There is no vacancy in this kind of PLZT. • B-site cationic vacancies.

Apply: Knowledge

• Plastic deformation occurs by the unfolding and bending of the molecules in a deformation region. The unfolding of the molecules or the breaking off of folded-chain blocks and the incorporation of these blocks into the deformed material, shows the role of molecular chain in plastic deformation.

• Yes. Integrated area under stress-strain curve is the toughness of the material.

Apply: Knowledge

Integrate: Knowledge

• So that we are able to determine the root causes to mechanical failures that will allow us to design more robust, reliable and safe machines.

• Despite design allowances, components still fail in service because the operating conditions produce brittleness, fatigue, creep, wear, environmental attack etc.,which,if ignored lead ultimately to failure.Otherwise, losses from corrosion's cost are very expensive. If we are understand about failures,we can make safely factor, better and better design structure and essential prevention

• When we want to design something, for example aeroplane, it is very important for us to have deep understanding about failure mechanism in materials that are used in aeroplane. So we need deep understanding about failure to design something.
