Time for Thanks…
The leaves are now changing color and we are headed towards cooler temperatures, which must mean November is upon us. And while I will miss the warm summer heat, I look forward to some long overdue rain and some
fresh snow in the Sierras. Customary for November, it is time for us all to reflect and be reminded of all we are thankful for. I am incredibly thankful for my family and their support over the years; especially over the past eighteen months as they have made this journey alongside me with Lavish. I am also thankful for my amazing staff and all their hard work. This publication truly would be stand without them! And of course, my team and I are enormously thankful to the community for all their generous support and encouragement for the magazine as we continue to grow. We have been embraced and adopted into this loving community and it has truly been spectacular to feel so welcomed.
With the holidays fast approaching, turkey, potatoes, casseroles and pies are on the brain (yum!). For some awesome meal ideas, check out our Comfort Cravings feature where we spotlight five holiday dishes from local restaurants that will leave you hungry! From chicken breast and potatoes au gratin to southern style shrimp and grits, these dishes are sure to satisfy any appetite. Looking to spruce up your home for the holidays? Check out Rod Works, a unique home decor store located at the Palladio in Folsom, and this month’s Lavish on Locals. Need help? Store manager, Nicole Hicks, and her team will help you do everything from design a room to pick out specialty gift items.
Looking for a good brew? Check out our Sip & Savor Opener on Hop House, a newly-opened public house in El Dorado Hills Town Center. They feature 12 beers on tap and nine bottled beers to serve a wide range of tastes and palettes, and of course, their famous cheeseburger.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all! And as always, thank you for your loyal readership and see you in December!

Cheers to Summer!
There are so many things to love about this time of year. The hot weather, late days, cool drinks, fun in the sun, backyard barbeques and good times with friends and family are what come to mind most. With the kids out of
school, there is no better time to pack up and take advantage of all the fun things to do around our community. We are surrounded with gorgeous scenery from the rolling golden hills to beautiful Folsom Lake; the outdoors are our playground, go enjoy it! Our Charity Spotlight this month declares July as National Parks and Recreation month, so pack up that picnic basket, the kids, and enjoy a picturesque day outside! This issue of Lavish, we tried to encompass all things summer. With temperatures soaring into the triple digits, we took our search indoors to find the ultimate summer cocktail! We were fortunate enough to be introduced to six awesome bartenders who wowed us with their creations. Besides taste testing through these pieces of art (tough job, we know...) we got to meet some incredible people who express their passion in every glass. I strongly encourage you to pay them a visit, you will not be disappointed! Appearing on our cover this month is our Sweet Summer Days fashion spread. Although the shoot fell on the hottest day of the year to date, we had a blast with the help from Larry Barrett at Lucky's Land and Sea. Larry provided the gorgeous boat we shot and also coordinated a friend to drive us around the lake to take some incredible water shots. Everything you see in these photos are for sale, including the boat! I could not be more thankful of Larry and the Lavish team for sticking it out that day! It was a scorcher! In line with the heat this month, we have selected out Getaway to the amazing Phoenix, AZ. Just a short plane ride away, this oasis amidst the desert is an incredible option for relaxation and adventurers alike. Also spotlighted this month is Back Wine Bar & Bistro in Folsom. If you have not tried this restaurant, I'm sure the photos will entice you to try them out! As always, thank you for your loyal readership! and I hope you all enjoy this fun issue! See you in August! Cheers! LAUREN STURMAN

RODWORKSBY KELSEY WEHSELS | PHOTOS DAN HOOD
From managing, designing and creating, she does it all.
Creativity and design is what inspires El Dorado Hills native, Nicole Hicks, store manager at Rodworks, a unique home decor shop featuring items such as sofa tables, bookcases, decorative items and seasonal gifts. Almost two years old, Rodworks opened in December 2012 and Hicks has been with them ever since.
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2014 17
Named after the unique idea by owners Mark and Kristen Tuttle to use a frame rod to hang pictures, the frame rod has become one of their most popular items, inspiring the name of the store. However, when the store first opened, there was confusion about the name. “When we first opened, we got a lot of calls asking about fishing rods or hot rods,” said Hicks. With five employees, the Folsom store is the only California location, located in the Palladio. “The Palladio is absolutely beautiful,” she said. “It’s like a little community and a one-stop-shop.” Wanting to stay close to home, Hicks chose to go to Chico State to study business. After taking general education and business courses, she decided she wanted to do something else, and switched her major to art with an emphasis in interior design, even studying art and architecture abroad in Northern Italy. After obtaining her Bachelor’s degree, she worked doing kitchen and bath remodels. “It wasn’t the creative environment that I was striving for so I began restoring and painting antiques,” she said. From there, she found her place at Rodworks. “Having a degree in interior design, I always knew I wanted to be doing something creative, and the store is the perfect environment for creativity,” she the store manager. One of the services Hicks and her employees offer is in-store design help, where customers can bring in pictures and measurements of their space and the team will put ideas together.
L O L LAVISH ON LOCALS
One of the main items trending right now? Lanterns. “You can fill them with a basic candle or use floral or pumpkins to change out seasonally,” said Hicks. And currently her favorite item in the store is a sign that reads ‘Forever, For Always, No Matter What,’ which hangs above her bed. Rodworks is currently gearing up for their busiest seasons, fall and winter, where they feature a large selection of items for Halloween, fall and Christmas time. To showcase their enthusiasm for this time of year, the store currently has a Christmas tree decorated in a fall theme. While many people turn to Rodworks for holiday decorations, they also turn to Rodworks for specialty gifts.“Christmas is my personal favorite because we decorate several different themed trees and carry everything from
ornaments to stockings, wooden outdoor Santas and sleighs, garlands and wreaths,” she said. Hicks admits there is nothing she dislikes about her job. “I know it sounds cliche, but I love my job!” she said. And the best part for her is making clients happy. “It is so rewarding to hear customers come in for the first time and say ‘I just found my new favorite store!’ I love it when I can help someone find exactly what they’re looking for,” she explained.

TRENDING with DebiTECHNOLOGY’S IMPACT ON THE REAL ESTATE MARKETBY KELSEY WESHELS & DEBI AMBROFF
As we cruise into the last few months of the year in real estate, we are thinking about 2015. Most of us look back at our business in 2014 and evaluate what worked, but also look forward to what’s new and how it will allow us to work more efficiently. I found myself incredibly excited after our annual convention, recently introducing a new digital platform, geared to make home buying and selling really fun, fast, unique and super efficient. It is so incredibly awesome and I can’t wait until it’s launched to the public. One thing is for certain, we are in the new era of real estate. It is important for today’s real estate professional to bridge
L O L LAVISH ON LOCALS
the gap between the old way of doing business into the new digital age. According to research done by The Search Agency, real estate clicks on smartphones grew 10.7% between the fourth quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of 2013. Tablet clicks even shot up higher, increasing 20.2 percent quarter after quarter, and over 87% year after year. Consumers are getting more and more comfortable searching for real estate on mobile devices. Gone are the days of searching just from your laptop or desktop, now it’s about what tablet or size smartphone to purchase. The National Association of Real Estate introduced some interesting information recently as to who is currently buying real estate and what percent. Generation Y, born early 1980s to early 1990s makes up the largest share of home buyers at 31%. This generation was raised within a time period where they had constant access to technology. Computer, mobile phones, internet were a part of their youth. Because of that, this generation is attracted to companies that embrace technological advancements. This generation has the largest share of first time home buyers at 76%. The share of first time home buyers declines as age increases. Generation X, born between the early 1960s to the early 1980s, follows Generation Y at 30%, the Baby Boomers, born 1946 to early 1960s at 30% and the Silent Generation, born 1925 to 1945 are the smallest share at 9%. Among all Generations, the first step was looking online at properties for sale. Gen Y and Gen X were most likely to look online for more information about the home buying process, while the Silent Generation is most likely to contact a real estate agent. My Silent Generation client feels more comfortable coming to my office or meeting at their home to discuss their real estate needs, while Generation Y and X would rather discuss their needs by email, or meet you at the property they want to view and most all prefer daily communication by text message. More than half of Gen Y and Gen X buyers used a mobile device during their home search. And among those who did, 26% of Gen Y and 22% of Gen X found the home they ultimately purchased via a mobile device. Younger buyers were predominately referred to their agent through a friend, neighbor or relative, while older buyers were more likely to use an agent again that they previously used to buy or sell a home. No matter what Generation clients fall in, a happy client is a client for life and will refer you continually to their friends and relatives.

L O L CHARITY SPOTLIGHT
ALZHEIMER’SAssociationNORTHERN CALIFORNIA/NORTHERN NEVADA CHAPTER
BY KELSEY WEHSELS
C H A R I T Y S P O T L I G H T
November is known for many things; changing leaves, Thanksgiving, tur-key, Black Friday, just to name a few. But it is also National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. The Alzheimer’s Association, formed in 1980 is the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Their mission is “to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.” Named after Dr. Al-ois Alzheimer who discovered the disease in 1906 when he encountered damaged brain tissue from a woman who died of a mysterious mental illness, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, creating problems with memory, thinking and behavior. It is a progressive disease, getting worse over time, and is fatal as there is no cure. Two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease are women and it is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and the fifth leading cause of death in California. Thankfully, the Alzheimer’s Association has a Northern California/Northern Nevada Chapter, offering support groups, learn-ing classes and workshops, and fundraising events to raise money for research and create awareness.
There is an extensive list of classes to choose from, including classes on awareness where people learn about recognizing the first signs of the disease and early detection, under-standing the disease and research updates. They also feature classes on reducing risk where people learn tips about keeping their body and mind healthy, as well as classes for caregiv-ers and family members including legal planning and financial plan-ning. In their last fiscal year, the association had 15,593 people at-tend their educational programs and 14,255 attend their support groups. The cause of the disease is unknown and there is no formal test to diag-nose the disease, a comprehensive medical examination determines the diagnosis. But there are clues that establishes someone has the illness. The characteristics of the disease includes abnormal clumps (amyloid plaques) and tangled bundles of fi-bers (neurofibrillary tangles) found in the brain.
“One of the most common myths about Alzheimer’s disease is that it is normal part of aging, but that is simply not true!” said Patty Guinto, Director of Communications for the Alzheimer’s Association. “It’s a disease that causes brain cells to malfunction and ultimately die. It’s the 6th leading cause of death in the United States, and it is the only cause of death in the top 10 causes of death that cannot be prevented, cured or slowed.”The most popular event the as-sociation hosts is the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which has raised more than $225 million since 1989. The Northern California/Northern Ne-vada chapter has 17 walks which have raised over $3 million. This year, the chapter hopes to see close to 20,000 participate in the walks.

It's that time of year where food cravings put diets aside and leave your taste buds salivating for meat, potatoes and almost anything cooked in butter. And that's ok. Comfort food is defined as food that creates positive sentiments with sensations of elation and happiness. And who wouldn't want to feel good around this time of year? If you're hosting a holiday gathering, we have some great comfort food recipes with a lavish twist. Read on for five local
restaurant favs that have just the dishes to hit the spot. Bon Appétit!

SOUS VIDE PORK BRISKET
Pork brisket has always been a comfort food favorite and a Southern delight. This recipe features a classic dish with an interesting twist. The sous vide process cooks the brisket in a vacuum-sealed package, holding the temperature constant at 135.2 degrees Fahrenheit for 18 hours. This process not only makes the pork extremely tender, but helps to keep in all the natural juices. After cooking, cut the portions into eight oz., blacken and serve over a smoked sweet potato puree. This dish is served with argula, onion and bacon hash that is sautéed in a garlic herb butter. The pork is then covered with an apple gremolata, including fresh parsley and lemon zest for additional flavoring. It is important to let the meat rest several minutes after cooking to allow the juices to
redistribute throughout the meat and also provide additional flavor and moisture in all portions of the pork.

The FirehouseDUCK CONFIT - FALL VEGETABLE HASH
While you may not think duck is a normal comfort food dish, this one will certainly change your mind. Confit, a food that has been cooked using grease, oil or sugar water, this dish was prepared with duck fat. This untraditional method not only creates a flavorful dish, but tenderizes the meat to perfection. One of the most convenient aspects to using this process is its longevity. In this recipe, the duck is packed with brown sugar and refrigerated for 24 hours giving it a hint of savory sweetness. The next day, it is baked for 2-3 hours (or until tender) at 275 degrees. This recipe also uses a vegetable hash, complete with roasted sweet potatoes and butter-braised leeks to create a balanced flavor, which is then topped off with a poached egg. A
stunningly, gorgeous dish with equally stunning flavor is sure to leave you feeling happy.

Selland's Market CafeROASTED CHICKEN BREAST & POTATOES AU GRATIN
When most people think of comfort food, they often think of fried chicken. But Selland's offers a far more healthier way of eating the white meat while still maintaining its comfort food appeal and low calorie content. This roasted chicken is refrigerated overnight in a marinade consisting of lemon juice, white wine, garlic and salt to give it a zesty flavor. The chicken is cooked at 325 degrees Fahrenheit until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 160 degrees. Of course a chicken comfort food dish would not be complete without a side of potatoes. This dish has potatoes au gratin, a potato and cheese casserole. Using a Japanese mandolin to slice the potatoes into small discs, the gratin is made layering potatoes into a creamy mixture of Gruyere and Parmesan cheese, heavy cream, butter and garlic. The dish is then cooked at 300 degrees Fahrenheit for 50 minutes. Once the gratin is cooked, add some
cheese to the top and put under the broiler for a cheesy crunch.
TheChefsTable:SOUTHERN STYLE SHRIMP
& GRITS WITH TABASCO BUTTER(LEFT)
If you're a seafood lover, look no further. The Chef's Table features a comfort food dish comprised of seafood and grits that will have you believing you're in the South. With a Tabasco butter, this dish is sure to spice up any dinner occasion. To cook the grits, sauté onions and garlic in a sauce pan, then add three cups of l iquid (water or chicken stock) and whisk in the grits. As the grits thicken, continue to add liquid in one cup increments. This process should take about 30 minutes. When done, add cheese and salt and pepper for taste. Then sauté the shrimp, adding white wine and butter. Season with salt and pepper for taste, adding Tabasco sauce to create some heat. Remember, the more Tabasco sauce you add, the hotter the dish will be. One of the most convenient aspects to this dish is the simplicity of the preparation and execution, giving you more time to spend with
your friends and family.
10/22:LAMB MEATLOAF (RIGHT)
Meatloaf has always been a traditional comfort food favorite. But in this recipe, Sacramento's 10/22 takes an ordinary dish and spices it up. Usually made with ground beef, this recipe using lamb for its base meat, with the loaf comprised of various flavors including garlic, mint, onion, celery, rosemary, Worcestershire sauce and ketchup to give it a bold taste. Panko bread crumbs can be added to create a crunchy texture. The ingredients are all mixed together and the loaf is baked for an hour at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. The dish is complete with a sauce to go on top of the meatloaf. Composed of spices including onion, tomatoes, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground cloves and salt, the sauce simmered in a sauce pan on low heat until it is reduced to a thick consistency. Then add the mixture to a blender and puree until smooth. This is truly a fun dish to enjoy not just around the holidays, but any time
of the year!

FEELINGComfortable
Did you ever walk into a room and feel so comfortable in it you didn’t want to leave? For some people, arranging a room in such a way is an intuitive skill. For others, it is a learned skill. Which ever the case, the room feels enjoyable and people want to be in that space. This phenomenon is called the feeling of good “Feng Shui.” If you want that feeling in your home or office, here are some tips to help you cre-ate that pleasant sentiment in your own space. Balanced interiors create peace and harmony in your life which in turn gives you positive energy that enables one to be more focused on your thoughts. There is no right or wrong in Feng Shui, it’s simply a feeling thing that allows you to get in touch with yourself and others. We do not realize how other people and our environments affect us, and it is important to remember that we all are connected in some way. Since most of us live hectic lives, we operate very fast and find ourselves out of balance, and Feng Shui practitioners place value on the notion that carefully arranged living conditions contribute to overall good health, prosperity and success.

ONEClear out your clutter. Get rid of everything you do not love. TWOAvoid awkward seating that is not conducive to conversation. THREEAvoid harsh angles that point at people. This is negative energy in a space.
FOURCircles are great. A square or rectangular coffee table may not feel as good as a circular or oval one. FIVEMirrors relieve tension in a room. Installing a mirror at the end of a hallway gives you a comforting feeling. SIXRemove chipped or broken furnishings in your home. Sends the message you do care about your environment. SEVENSoften the corners in your rooms with real or silk trees. Tall folding screens may be used for the same purpose.
Think of natural flow when looking at the interior of your home, and remember that nega-tive energy runs in straight lines and positive energy runs in meandering lines that simulate the free feeling of nature. Most people live in homes that are created from several square-like rooms, and the statement we often hear “I feel all boxed in” is a very realistic one. As a pro-fessional designer who emphasizes Feng Shui in room arrangements, I constantly design sofa sectionals with curved corners to soften out the square boxes we live in. Curved corners dramati-cally change the feeling of a room and introduce a feeling of warmth and love in a room. In some subliminal way you feel like you are be-ing hugged in your personal space. It simply “feels good.” In addition, note the number and placement of windows in your home. Are they creating a design problem in your home? Soften them up by adding the right fabric or window treatment. Think of your windows, walls and corners as a background for the big picture you are creating. Your backdrop (collective effort of walls and window coverings) needs to enhance your furniture placement. Do not be afraid to pull your furniture away from the walls and into the room. Angling some furnishings creates more interest in a space. With just a few simple tips we have discussed you might be in for a big surprise. Remember a
tag line I created years ago. BALANCED INTERIORS DO NOT COST MORE, THEY JUST FEEL BETTER.

TRAVEL NORWAY
For years we’ve looked forward to visiting Norway and considered a cruise, escorted tours, renting a car or concentrating on public transportation. Depending on your travel preferences all are great options and can be arranged quite easily with your favorite travel agent or online. After considerable deliberation we finally decided using public transportation would give us more flexibility and best suit our traveling style. It was the
perfect choice. So now find out why we consider this trip one of our all-time favorites and one our readers, especially those with even a bit of Scandinavian heritage, should add to their bucket list. And for a more current Norway connection consider this: Disney’s recent film, Frozen (based on Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen), the world’s highest grossing animated movie ever, used Norway’s stunning landscapes as inspiration.

Oslo: Scandinavia’s oldest capital, with a rich history and cosmopolitan setting, is the perfect place to start and end a Norwegian sojourn. We made our headquarters at the Thon Panorama Hotel, ideally located downtown near the train station. This boutique style property, like every hotel we experienced, featured a huge full-breakfast buffet. www.thonhotels.com. With a plethora of things to see and do we’d like to recommend buying a VIP Oslo Pass allowing free entrance into all the top attractions. Rather than list websites for each attraction we urge readers to check them out and all things Oslo on: www.visitoslo.com. History Buffs shouldn’t miss: Viking Ship Museum, home to incredibly preserved Viking ships buried more than 1100 years ago now uncovered and remarkably restored; Fram Museum highlights the polar expeditions of Fram, the world’s strongest wooden polar expedition ship ever built still holding the record for sailing farthest toward north and south poles; Kon-Tiki Museum houses original reed rafts, famous for a Thor Heyerdahl expedition and Oscar winning documentary proving that early man could have mastered sailing before modern navigation inventions arrived; Maritime Museum features historic shipping and fishing displays plus a do-not-miss panoramic film about the Norwegian Coast; Norwegian Folk Museum provides an amazing display of many traditional homes, farmhouses plus a church from the year 1200; The medieval Akershus Castle (from 1299), sitting on a bluff overlooking town, has been a royal residence and then a fortress in 1592. Starting in 1637 it was remodeled into a true renaissance castle including magnificent halls and government reception rooms still used today. It also contains the Resistance Museum documenting the strong Norwegian

resistance to the Nazis and the infamous traitor Quisling. Into Royalty? Then don’t miss visiting the Royal Palace (1824-1848) where beautiful state room tours are only available in summer but change-of-the-guards are viewable daily at 1:30 P.M. Like beautiful walks or jogs? Here are three wonderful possibilities: Vigeland Park, a massive public park filled with 200 plus sculptures in bronze, granite and cast-iron by famed Norse sculptor, Gustav Vigeland; Ekeberg Park, a recently upgraded ten acre high-in-the-hills park featuring sculptures, hiking trails and incredible views of Oslo below; another great stroll is the harbor-side Oslo Opera House which has a rare feature- a white marble ramp-like roof starting at ground level allowing slow winding walks to the highest rooftop point for more incredible city views. Love Art? Then don’t miss the National Gallery, Norway’s largest collection of fine art including Cezanne, Manet and the country’s most famous artist Edvard Munch with his paintings, Scream and Madonna. A major surprise revelation was City Hall, site of the Nobel Peace Prize Award presentations and also home to some of the most majestic artistic wall tapestries we’ve ever seen. Interested in Skiing or Seeking Adventure? Then don’t pass on heading up to nearby Holmenkollen, site of many world ski-jumping events, home to the world’s oldest Ski Museum and an adrenaline pumping zip-line off their highest ski-jump tower. Dining Faves: Our meals at Karlsborg Restaurant (Ekeberg Park) and Tjuvholmen-Sjomagasin (on the newly developed waterfront) were so creative, they validated our pre-trip research indicating the culinary scene in Oslo was world class. Oslo is really a walk-able city allowing us to hoof-it to most all these sites.
Lillehammer: We opted for the two hour Dovre Railway’s Komfort Class from Oslo to this famous 1956 Winter Olympics site, the most northern Olympic location ever. The train experience was a wonderful decision as the scenic route along Lake Mjosa, Norway’s largest, provided awesome vistas at nearly every turn. On arrival, we checked into the cozy Clarion Collection Hotel Hammer for two nights in the heart of quaint downtown. Highlights: A visit to the Olympic site and tour of their Olympic Museum was Don’s singular most enjoyable experience in Norway. Hey, he’s still a sports writer at heart! This amazing display representing every Olympic Games, both summer and winter events, was the best and most enthralling we’d ever visited; A chairlift ride up to the top of the ski jump tower, used in the Olympics, provided special thrills as skiers were doing spine tingling practice jumps on the state-of-art porcelain surface utilized in warm
weather; Our walk around the Maihaugen Folk Museum, featuring outdoor exhibits (circa 1200-to 1980’s) of over 200 Nordic homes, farmhouses and a church, with young costumed actors performing in some locations, provided an entertaining and educational afternoon. Dining: Our Lillehammer meals were more casual than Oslo yet provided some excellent comfort type foods. Egon Restaurant, delightfully overlooking the Mesnaelva River, served up a tasty creamy fish soup at lunch and Nikkers Restaurant added a new culinary adventure to our list of exotic choices-a delicious reindeer stew supper. www.lillehammer.com/en.
Trondheim: Next on our itinerary was another scenic train ride north to this historic city, founded in 997 by Viking King Olaf and the celebrated capital of Norway until 1217. To thoroughly feel the history of this medieval community you must tour the town, the classic Nidaros Cathedral (the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world) and the adjoining Archbishop’s Palace Museum offering a dazzling display of Crown Regalia and many notable artifacts, some actually excavated at the site. Our brief stay at the modern Clarion Hotel Congress, newest hotel in Trondheim, provided our entire trip’s best breakfast buffet and wonderful water views from their rooftop lounge-bar and many rooms. On the culinary front, Havfruen (means Mermaid) Restaurant captivated us with a three course dinner fit for gourmands. www.visittrondheim.no
Alesund, Loen & Bergen: Arriving first at ALESUND our ultimate superlatives begin! In our eyes this was our trip’s most picturesque town and is stage central for the world’s most beautiful fjord region. Hotel Brosundet, a tastefully remodeled historic warehouse, was a lodging gem. To add luster to your visit consider these activities: walk the 418 steps to the top of Mount Aksla where incredible views of the town, the surrounding islands and distant

Sunnmore Alps await; do a walking tour of this fascinating Art Nouveau community; and visit their dramatic aquarium, currently expanding into the sea. Also try to arrange a trip out to the fabulous Alnes Lighthouse, one of the most dramatic coastal settings we’ve encountered in eons; our number one recommendation, while in Alesund, is to include a Hurtigruten cruise ship day-excursion or bus ride on treacherous Eagle Road out to see the quaint little town of Geiranger and the majestic Geiranger Fjord. This crown jewel of the Norwegian fjords, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the longest, deepest, and probably most awesome fjords on the planet providing vistas unparalleled in the fjord universe. Many stunning waterfalls and imposing high walled narrow passageways are awe-inspiring. Once arriving in town, do not miss hiking the strenuous but worth-the-energy 400 plus steps up along the rushing glacial river to the Norwegian Fjord Center where the fjord story is brought to life by amazing multimedia exhibits. Our best Alesund meal was at XL Diner where creative cuisine and professional service belied their diner name. www.verdsarvfjord.no; www.visitalesund.com. Our next stop, LOEN, provided our most positive revelations of the trip. Our Loenfjord Hotel stay, on the banks of the roaring Loelva River was a lovely experience and our dinner at their sister property across the road, Hotel Alexandra was as exceptional as the hotel, itself. Norway admittedly doesn’t boast any five star hotels, but the Alexandra was the most upscale Norse lodging property we visited. Our two biggest surprises were rides out to Lovatnet Lake and Briksdal Glacier. The lake was very similar in stunning pristine beauty to famous Lake Louise in Canada but unlike Louise, it has an unspoiled beauty, lack of commercial development and a mind boggling tourist void. Briksdal, when compared to the glaciers we’ve hiked in Alaska and Canada, was monumentally superior in visual splendor with awesome waterfalls, rock formations and a thundering river. A Norway visit just seeing these sites should justify the trip. Into extreme adventure? A strenuous guide assisted rock climb hike up Mt. Hoven to a narrow suspension bridge and return is a definite test of courage. Our
last destination, BERGEN, is considered Western Norway’s “gateway to the fjords”. After settling in at centrally located Scandic City Hotel, we walked by the famous fish market to the Floibanen Funicular to the top of Mt. Floyen for the best vistas of this photo-inviting town. We’d definitely recommend visitors use the Hop-On-Hop-Off tour and not miss the following: Castle Rosenkrantz with the impressive Haakons Hall and the tower climb for more town views; Hansiatic Museum, located in a 1700’s building, provides a fascinating history of the Germans in Norway’s early fishing industry. A few of the original Hansiatic era’s buildings along the picturesque waterfront are still standing. Barely standing or leaning dramatically is a better description but quite unique, nonetheless. The four KODE museums display additional Munch paintings and modern art as well as one of Europe’s finest collections of Chinese artifacts and Norwegian furnishings; Bergen’s Aquarium claims to be
the biggest and best in Norway. Another culinarian highlight was a mouthwatering dinner at the famous Unicorn Restaurant, overlooking the harbor in another Hansiatic historic building. Their special fish platter of Norway’s finest brought our taste buds into gastronomic heaven. www.visitbergen.com. All three of these beautiful but dramatically contrasting towns are considered integral parts of Fjord Norway and full details on each city may be found at: www.fjordnorway.com.
Bottom Line: Yes, this really was one of the most best-ever trips we’ve taken and here’s why: amazing almost indescribable scenery; especially rich middle-ages history; fabulous sea foods; surprisingly mild weather due to the Gulf Stream; very friendly engaging people who mostly speak English and genuinely seem to welcome Americans. Admittedly Norway is quite expensive but careful research should locate lodging to fit most budgets. On a future trip we’d like to: head further north to visit native Laplander villages (AKA Samis); experience the midnight sun’s 24 hours of daylight; visualize the unique luminous color palette of the Aurora Borealis (AKA Northern lights). And by the way we flew roundtrip on the highly regarded Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) non-stop San Francisco into Copenhagen, Denmark and on to Oslo, via connecting flight. www.flysas.com.
(Editor’s note: In December’s issue our travel team will write about their recent visit to Truckee/Northstar Tahoe, one of California’s best winter and summer resort areas)

For owner, Jason Enyeart, having his own restaurant was in his blood. He grew up in the restaurant and hospitality business and knew he always wanted to open his own someday. With his experience in the fine dining industry, Enyeart is used to wearing a 5-piece suit to work, but knew he wanted his place to have a more relaxed feel. “My dream job is to work in a T-shirt and flip flops,” he said. “I like the casual environment Hop House offers. It’s much more comfortable for me.” Hop House is unique in that patrons must order all drinks and food from the bar and seat themselves. “I like this way of doing things because it forces the customers to walk around and interact,” he explained. He told a story about a woman who was confused about the format of the restaurant and asked why he decided to do that. He explained his reasoning and upon finding the customer later, she understood what he meant. “When I went up the bar, I started a conversation with a lady and now we’re like best friends and we’re even going horseback riding next week!” she told him. He admits that one of his favorite aspects to the business has been the sense of community created by both his staff and the customers. “I love the community,” he said. “The staff are already becoming best friends and we’re creating regulars.” The restaurant boasts 12 beers on tap and 9 bottled beers. But if you see your favorite, get it while you can. Enyeart explains with so many beers to choose from, they are constantly changing out beers to accommodate new flavors. With 22 menu items and 6 sides, customers are bound to find something they love. And they did. The favorite? The cheeseburger. “I’ve had people tell me it’s the best burger they’ve ever had,” said Enyeart. The cheeseburger is even his favorite menu item,

with avocado and bacon. And the menu includes an extra bonus for some patrons: all the buns or sandwiches and burgers are gluten-free. The name for the restaurant came from a cycling trip Enyeart took to Salt Lake City. While there, he found a place called Sugar House with a sign in lights. He liked the idea “House” and the design of the sign , so he began to concept ideas from there. “We played around a little bit with names and came up with Hop House,” he explained. “It just sounded natural, and like a fun place to be.” Be

El Dorado County’s Grace Patriot Wines, a family-run business, provides not only award-winning wine, but history to the area. Over the past year, Grace Patriot Wines has added 13 gold medals to their resume. Their current vintage of Lewis Grace Cabernet Sauvignon won two best of class awards, including one at the competition in neighboring Amador County. The estate Lewis Grace Pinot Noir is not only a novelty for an area that lacks local Pinots, but, in its most recent review, it received a rating of 92 points. The Lewis Grace Syrah wins gold after gold, and is, vintage after vintage, a crowd and critic pleaser. While the serious reds win big awards, the casual blends like Five PM and Hip Hip Rose are made with just as much care but remind visitors that wine can be enjoyed anytime, whether it’s for a special occasion or with relaxing conversation around the kitchen table. Seated on busy Carson Road in Apple Hill, the winery can be easy to miss. Unassuming from the road, the winery boasts a sleek tasting room with charming ambiance that will bring you back for a second visit that can’t be seen in a mere drive-by. There is just a gravel parking lot that is gathered together by a pair of old red buildings, and a modest entryway with a misleading façade that veils a historic ranch, a majestic setting, and a dynamic portfolio of estate wines. Even the landmark red barn is more than what it seems. Now refurbished and repainted, the barn has been part of the property since long before there was a vineyard or winery. Together with an 1885 ranch house that has been put back together, the restored original buildings help maintain the one-hundred-plus years of history which used to be the Irving Ranch on the route of the Pony Express. Today, a simple sign reading “tasting room” directs visitors beyond the barn to the Grace Patriot experience. The initial friendly front gives way to an elegant expanse. The historic barn falls into the background as the focus shifts to the view from the patio. Rolling hills of pines, some in the neat rows of Christmas tree farms and others sprawled out naturally,

crescendo into the vast Crystal Range. Rows of Cabernet Sauvignon vines line the northern edge of the patio and picnickers can sit and sip their wine only feet from where the grapes are grown. From here, it’s a showcase of the beauty of El Dorado County. The tasting room looks out on to the patio and frames the timeless scene through its windows and the grand double doors that bring guests in. Just as the property has balanced a mix between breathless beauty and casual country, the wine lineup is another balancing act, featuring a blend of classic varietals under the Lewis Grace brand as well as a few fresh, fun favorites.

m2 WinesBY KELSEY WESHELS
From its origins to its location, M2 Wines seem to do things a little differently. Layne Montgomery, winemaker and co-founder of M2 Wines, never planned on making wine. With the persuasion from his wife, he decided to try things out and was soon making wine out of his garage. Having moved to the Sacramento region to start a second career in marketing (he had an extensive career in broadcasting in Arkansas and Colorado), Montgomery soon learned his true calling was winemaking. In 1999, he made his first 30-gallon barrel, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
Things only progressed from there. In 2000, Montgomery made a 60-gallon barrel, followed by three barrels in 2001 and seven barrels in 2002 and 2003 and in 2004, M2 Wines released its first commercial vintage of 750 cases. The winery finally found a permanent home in 2006 at an industrial park in Northeast Lodi, an unassuming and unique location for the winery. However, it is obvious that the winery is more focused on wine and people than appearances. As the winery kept expanding, there was a demand for more space so a new winery was built, opening in January 2011 with an “industrial chic” theme.
Gaining popularity in the area, the winery has created a following through their wine club, which they call “Cellar Dwellers.” The club boasts a shipment each quarter of 2, 6, or 12 wines a shipment, either all reds or mixed with reds and whites, along with tasting room and wine discounts, invitations to special events and members-only sales. Currently in stock are three Zinfandel varietals, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and red and white table wines. Describing their wines as complex, balanced and well structured, the winery uses grapes from a variety of vineyards in California, including Lodi, Napa and the Sierra Foothills. And while you won’t see any acreage of grapes at the M2 Winery, they recently planted Zinfandel vines on their property off Peltier Road and expect those grapes to be ready to produce wine in about three years. Those wines will be called M2 Estate Wine. With a current production of close to 3,800 cases a year, the winery has no plans to slow down any time soon. You can meet the M2 Winery crew at their next event: Cellar Dweller’s Give Pizza A Chance Release Party, complete with tastings of M2’s latest along with Rustic Oven’s wood-fired pizza on Saturday, December 6 from 12-5pm.

The Lodi winemaking industry has enjoyed tremendous expansion in the last decade. The land devoted to vineyards has increased from 46,000 acres in 1996 to nearly 100,000 today. Now the region produces more fine wine than Napa and Sonoma combined! The Lodi appellation is proudly blowing away the mists of anonymity that have shrouded local wines, allowing them to bask in the sunshine of worldwide recognition. We invite you to take a short ride and discover Lodi Wine Country for yourself.

You’ve seen them all over farmers markets and likely use them for brilliant fall decorations, but did you know pomegranates are November’s super food. Their antioxidant and vitamin rich fruit are just one of the many reasons to love this deep red season delight. While they may appear tough on the outside and more like a decorative piece than a meal option, it’s time to start adding pomegranates to your meals and here’s a few reasons why. First, they are a truly delicious addi-tion to any salad, drink, or dessert. Not to mention, they are pretty appetizing themselves. Second, they can help you decrease mindless eating. While it’s a bit of work to peel a pomegranate and start indulging, it’s a great distraction from boredom binges. Many weight loss gurus will use the act of eating pomegranates as both a great snack but also as an activity. Removing the outer skin and working
to pull out the edible seeds helps you interact more with your food. And studies show, that decreases the actual amount you eat. And finally, the health benefits are astounding and will help you ward off colds and flus that come with the chang-ing of the seasons. What are the actual health benefits of pomegranates? Well, first of all they are an extremely anti-oxidant rich food. With polyphenols like tannins and anthocyanin’s which are the main components of the anti-oxidants in some of your favorite foods like cranberries and green tea. Similarly, their high vitamin content promotes coronary heath and is proven to lower cholesterol. To optimize on the health benefits of pomegranates consuming them raw in salads, smoothies, and by themselves will allow the utmost absorption of their components.

Waltz right into Visconti’s and you’ll find yourself in the kitchen of the Italian family you never had. Their warm atmosphere and exhaustive Italian selection is enough to make any mouth water and stomach grumble in anticipation. Each recipe used at Visconti’s Ristorante is generations old from the heart of Calabria and Sicily. You just know every single bite is authentic Italian Cuisine made from farm fresh ingredients and imported cheese and wine. Dining with Visconti’s is like dining with family and that’s exactly how they want it to be. The restaurant functions as an homage to traditional, old world family life that fills every guest with love and five-star food. Enjoy a night out with the family filled with food and good company. Or take your special someone out on a date to be surrounded with all the romance of Classic Italian music, beautiful traditional decor, and a wine list that is to die for. Their most popular dishes include Linguini con Gambera and Asparagus and all things parmigiana. However, our particular favorite is the Pollo al Vesuvio. Either way, order anything off the menu and we promise Visconti’s will be worth every single bite. True to their menu and atmosphere, it is Italian food for the soul.

E T I Q U E T T E FINAL THOUGHT BLACK FRIDAY
BLACKFridayBY EMILY VERBECK
We’re all about getting a great deal on shopping, and frankly who isn’t? But what we aren’t about is mass media news reports stating someone got a little too electrified in the electronics aisle and so in so is pressing charges. Because we trust you’re all going to be on your best behavior for your Black Friday adventures, we won’t lecture. Instead think of this as your step-by-step guide to getting what you want for great prices without all the drama of overly caffeinated shoppers.
MOB MENTALITYSure, that Italian leather bag is to die for, and every woman with half a brain has their cheeks pressed up against the windows and doors waiting for the store to open. All of a sudden, the doors are unlocked and the floodgate no longer stands between you and the purse of your dreams at half price. When the herd of hungry shoppers sprints into the store, remember to hesitate pushing and shoving because lawsuits are more expensive than the purse at full price. We promise.
PACE VS. RACEBefore you begin the trek out into the inimitable world that is Black Friday, resist the urge to purchase everything at a great price. Keep in mind everything is on sale but you likely left the house for a specific item or items. Think of finding your specific items as a quest. Do not get distracted by the shiny slashed prices or else, grasshopper, you may miss your true prize at the end.
CAMPING OUT POUTThe biggest mistake made on Black Friday is camping out with friend and family that are not up to the task at hand. 12 hours in the cold November air lying on the cement doesn’t make for good friends. If you’re looking to spread the love this holiday season, remember that you ought to only bring your nearest and dearest if they can supplement your shopping efforts rather than bring it down with a “well, I have been waiting far too long” mentality.
RECEIPTS. RECEIPTS. RECEIPTSYour checkout clerk is in a rush and you’re confident that you’ll never want to return your new 75% off LCD TV. Consequently, you skip the receipt. This is your most vital mistake of Black Friday etiquette. When the TV doesn’t work or is missing a remote or cable, you’re now one of a million looking to return an item with no documentation you ever bought it. Think of it this way: would you ever drive without car insurance? NO! Then never purchase on Black Friday without obtaining the receipt.
EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORMThe last rule is brief, but we swear by it. Before you shop for Black Friday, plan ahead. Do your research and know what you want. Then, once you know all about which stores have what you want, start pounding the pavement. Every store has a limited quantity. Those Black Friday Shopped who are prepared to risk a night out in the rain, are the one who walk away with all discounts. Or, if all else fails, don’t forget Cyber Monday is just a weekend away.
