Exciting First Step Toward COSMA Accreditation TheDepartmentofSportManagementandLeadershipStudiesispursingtheNationalSportManagementaccreditationwhichiscalledCOSMA(CommissiononSportManagementAccreditation).COSMAisaspecializedaccreditingbodythatpromotesandrecognizesexcellenceinsportmanagementeducationincollegesanduniversitiesattheundergraduateandgraduatelevels.ThepurposeofCOSMAistopromoteandrecognizeexcellenceinsportmanagementeducationthroughspecializedaccreditation.OnSeptember25,2013theCommissiondeterminedthatKutztownUniversityadequatelyprovidedtheinformationneededtobegrantedCandidacyStatus.Thisisanimportant irststeptowardfullaccreditation.Nextthedepartmentwillprepareacomprehensiveselfstudy,andundergoasitevisitconductedbyaprofessionalteamofpeerreviewersfromtheCOSMAmembership.CandidacyStatushelpsthedepartmentdevelopaclearunder-standingoftheaccreditationprocess.TheSelf-StudyCommitteeisbeingledbyDr.YongjaeKimandateamofcolleaguesincluding,Dr.FredGarman,Dr.SoojinKim,Dr.KerriCebula,Dr.DinaHayduk,Dr.ChristineLottesandDr.LorriEngstrom.TheDepartmentofSportManagementhasbeenworkingtowardachievingcandidacystatusfor iveyears.ThishonoristheresultofthehardworkanddedicationoftheoutstandingSportManagementfacultywithspecialthankstoDr.Kimforhisleadershipandcommitmentguidingtheaccreditationprocess.ThegoalofthedepartmentistoachievefullaccreditationbyFallof2015.

JordanFitzgeraldisaBSBAbusinessmajorwithaminorinSpanish.JordaniscurrentlyonaonesemesterexchangetotheUniversityofSeville,Spain.SheisafulltimestudenttakingSpanishandMarketingcoursesattheUniversityofSeville.Jordanappliedandwasacceptedintothe(ISA)InternationalStudentAssociationstudyabroadprogram.SheworkedwiththeKUIn-ternationalStudiesDepartmentandheradvi-sorandchairfortheBusinessAdministrationDepartment.JordanisalsotherecipientoftheJ.MarkPiscitelliMemorialScholarshipintheCollegeofBusiness.JordanwasPresidentoftheOrganizationforLatinoAwarenessandservedasVPfortheStudentResources,KutztownHonorsClub,Spring2013Semester,memberoftheAmericanMarketingAssociationandkeptpart-timeemploymentwhilemaintainingaGPAof3.6.Jordanwasaskedafewquestionsaboutherstudyabroadexperi-enceandsheprovidedthefollowinginformationforournewsletter.“IknewIwantedtostudyabroadassoonasIdeclaredaminorinSpanish.The irstsemesterthataSpanishclasswasn'tinmyscheduleIrealizedthatstudyingthelanguagemeantmoretomethanjust illinggeneraleducationrequirements.StudyingabroadisjustthenextstepformetolearnSpanishwellenoughtoapplyitinafuturecareer.Ihadseenmanyofmyfriendsstudyabroad,andmyhighschoolteacherspentayearinBarcelonawhenshewasincollege.Withthesupportofthemaswellastherestofmyfriendsandfamily,itwashardtosaynotolivinginSpainforthreemonths!TheUniversityofSevillahasover80,000students...alittlebitmorethanKutztown!SevillaisthethirdlargestcityinSpain,andhasaverymetropolitanlifestyle.Ilivewithahostmotherandanotherstudyabroadstudent,andattendclasseswithallinternationalstudents.AllofmyclassesaretaughtinSpanishandgorighttowardsmyminor,butIknowplentyofpeopleinmyprogramthattakeclassestaughtinEnglish.IlovethewaydaysarespenthereinSouthernSpain.Everyonedoesalotofwalking,IthinkIprobablyaverageabout3milesaday,andeveryonestillparticipatesinthetraditional'siesta'time,andbetweenthehoursof1to4mostshopsareclosedandpeopleareontheirlunchbreakandtakinganap.I'mafanofalloftheSpanishfoodI'vetried,frompaellatotortillatothemanymealsmadewithchickpeasorpotatoes.Someofmyfavoritethingstoeatoutarepapasbravas(potatowedgeswithhotsauce)andberenjenasconmiel(fried eggplantwithsugarcanehoneydrizzle).“
